Sinopsis

The Lion and the Rose, Part One: William Rising is the first book in an epic historical saga from debut author Hilary Rhodes. Extensively researched and compellingly told, it introduces us to the passionate drama and violent upheaval of eleventh-century Europe. The world as we know it, and the English language, would have been vastly different were it not for the driving ambition of one man: William the Conqueror. But conquerors are made, not born, and William was made in fire and blood. How does a boy become a man, surviving a tumultuous and terrifying childhood? And how does that man become a legend?William Rising plunges us into this world of danger and betrayal, of choosing sides and dying for absolutes. It follows the creation of a conqueror, as he grows up abandoned, learns to fight at an early age for anything he hopes to keep, and is sculpted into a remorseless, far-sighted, ruthlessly efficient soldier and statesman. From his origins as an orphaned, penniless bastard boy,...

Most of the books I've read about William spend very little time on this part of his life, and this one was done well. It really showed how complicated his path was and how his personality was shaped by it. The non-William parts about Edward and other figures seemed to come into the story awkwardly, but did provide necessary context. I hope to read the next one!11th-century dark-ages edward-the-confessor ...more Debbi714 18

Now I understand why William the Conqueror was the way he was!

I had been wanting to read this book for a long time. As a fan of historical fiction, I had not found many books on William the Conqueror. The Lion and the Rose fit the bill!

Hilary Rhodes starts the story when William is a young lad, the bastard son of the Duke of Normandy. But the Duke has no legitimate heirs, and he loves his son, makes him the heir over the objections of many. The Lion and the Rose takes us through William's tumultuous, bloody and dangerous childhood, and we see what shapes him into the man he becomes. He loses is father when he is only 7, and is hounded by his father's vassals who would to see him dead and themselves in power. The Lion and the Rose tells just the first part of the story and leaves us when William has finally become Duke of Normandy, and has to deal with the pit of vipers that are his vassals.

This is a really great book, and I am looking forward to the next in the series. Christina Rothfusz825 23

I love Historical Fiction and are always excited when I discover a new author I enjoy.

William Rising tells the story of William the conqueror, the illigitemate son of Robert from Normandy. He's made Duke at the age of 8 after the untimely death of he's father and is hunted ruthlessly by every nobleman in Normandy, trying to either capture or kill the young Duke.

However, William is a strong, stubborn and ruthless young boy who grows into a hard, strong leader and warrior.

It's a hard story, suburbly told and well researched. Kathleen201

"The Lion and the Rose" by William Rising is the first of a trilogy. This installment begins in the year 1028 with William the Conqueror as a boy and follows his youth up to his marriage in about 1051. William's boyhood up bringing and life threatening experiences explain his later reputation as a ruthless warrior and leader. I look forward to reading the next two historical novels. lucinda pierce4

Nice Historical Fiction portrayal of William the Bastard' s early years and those too power. Does an excellent job in giving some backstory and teeth to the dry history left behind.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Bonnie49 1 follower
