Before I Say Goodbye, Mary Higgins Clark

Mary Higgins Clark, delves into the mystery of psychic powers in her gripping new thriller, Before I Say Good-Bye.

When Adam Cauliff's new cabin cruiser, Cornelia II, blows up in New York harbor with him and several close business associates aboard, his wife, Nell MacDermott, is not only distraught at the loss but wracked with guilt because she and Adam had just had a serious quarrel and she had told him not to come home.

As the investigation into the boat's explosion proceeds, Nell is shocked by the official confirmation that it was not an accident but the result of foul play. Was Adam the target of the explosion?

As Nell searches for the truth about Adam's death, she receives messages from Adam transmitted by a medium.

What she does not know is that she is being closely watched, and the nearer she comes to learning what actually happened on the boat that night, the nearer she is to becoming the next victim of a ruthless killer.

Quite a disappointment after the heady rush that Mary Higgins Clark's books brought to me. This book of hers, Before I say Good-Bye, is more Jeffrey Archer rather than the style of prose that Mary herself specialized in. Also Mary's daughter, Carol Higgins Clark, has penned the type of books that caught my attention.

There is a mystery element here. Faint, very faint indeed, but its presence dislocated the ending of the book. The author had planned each day in the life of her characters, meticulously. Each date is chock full of action, of stuff brewing up in the horizon. But taken altogether, the full product is less than the sum of its parts.

The death of a couple of the characters did enliven things, but then the dull words had no respite for me. I had to wade through a lot of fluff to reach the end. I think partially reason of my reaction is that we don't get to know the characters better as time passes by. It's a pity, because the book certainly had potential.decent-enough let-down24 s Jerry (Rebel With a Massive Media Library)4,767 70

Growing up in a Christian home, I always heard that so-called psychic powers were nonsense. Back in the day, my mom and I knew a lady who went to see a psychic; said acquaintance was amazed that the psychic knew one of her daughter's personality traits just by hearing her name and birthdate. My mom, however, knew said trait was characteristic of all older children! Our acquaintance also said that the psychic told her that her younger daughter--a mere baby--would "play many roles"...but, that's so vague, you could say that about pretty much anyone. In fiction, people having psychic traits can be fun; I'm a longtime fan of That's So Raven, and I've also enjoyed similar stories where people could tell the future, such as The Secret Life of Samantha McGregor, which was akin to a dramatic, non-humorous version of that aforementioned Disney sitcom. Still, in real life, all that is nothing more than a crock; even the Bible agrees.

When I started this book, I was worried; I wondered if it was going to portray real-life "psychics" in a positive light. However, the novel ended up being a cautionary tale about them; the psychic turns out to be involved in a sinister plot, and some events that the protagonists thinks she sees happening in the future don't take place. It also featured Biblical references, even mentioning the story of Judas Iscariot, which was surprising from a secular author. The only downsides were occasional profanity, including d-words and misuses of God's name, and a remark about menstruation that was not only crude, but odd. I'm glad I bought several books by this author at the garage sales yesterday; I can't wait to read more of hers. This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full review21 s Meeko153 30

3.5 ? round-up to 4 ?

When I started reading this book, I was little worried.
" Wait! Psychic? Really? "
But it turned in good way and gave me good surprise!
WOW!! Ok! I that!!! Bravo, Ms. Clark!!

It's been for long while since I read her book last time. I did enjoy with very refreshin excitement.18 s Kelly H. (Maybedog)2,868 230

I think this was supposed to be a thriller. Not in the least bit thrilling, though. Slow moving, predictable and boring, with two dimensional characters. Despite the main protagonist being female, the women were unintelligent, gullible and naive. Almost all wrapped their lives around men. I can't believe I finished it. The most annoying thing was that when the characters were thinking or feeling anything it was said in the first person. For example, a woman alone in her apartment might think (not say aloud) "Whenever I miss my husband, I to wear his jacket because it makes me think of him." People don't think those things in words, they just feel them. how-audiobook what-suspense-thriller-action9 s 'Nathan BurgoineAuthor 48 books443

Y'know how sometimes you pick up a book and you think, "Wow, that's an interesting cover," and you flip it over and read the back and think, "Wow, that's an interesting plot set-up," and then you check out the author and you think, "Crap. That's an author I can't stand."

There's the sitch.

Thing is, I participated in an audiobookbox trade thingy on bookcrossing.com, and a whole box of audiobooks arrived, and this was in it. I have a thing for paranormal stories, and this title involves, at least tangentally, a lady who is somewhat psychic. She's pretty cool, lives a good life, and then boom, up in flames goeth the husband's boat while he and many business folk are on it. She's got this whole "I'm going to be in politics," thing going on, and she's entirely independent, and in a slight way you're quite quickly aware that she realizes the blow-uppance of her husband wasn't exactly a bad thing to her happiness and well-being. But still, it was her (at least hypothetically) life-mate, and so she when things don't add up, and she gets funny vibes about the deaths, she goes investigating - could it be that her husband was murdered? Not a boating accident, but a murder? No!

Yes.

So, four CDs later, and I'm done. It was pretty good - except that I couldn't stand most of the characters, and even the heroine was a bit... wishy-washy? Anyway, the paranormal part was paranormal enough that I d that sub-plot, and as such, the CD audiobook gets a passing grade. Also, the reader, Jan Maxwell, did a decent job at letting her voice display the characters - I wasn't often lost in multiple-character conversations, as so often happens in audiobooks.

I thought that this book was good4 s Drebbles649 8

Nell MacDermott is devastated when her husband, Adam Cauliff, dies in a boat explosion. Her grief is made worse because she had quarreled with Adam the day before he died about her desire to follow in her grandfather's footsteps and run for political office. When people start questioning whether Adam was involved with shady real estate deals, Nell struggles to clear his name before it ruins her political chances. She reluctantly uses the help of a psychic who claims that Adam is speaking to her from another world. But the digger she deeps, Nell finds out much more about Adam than she expected in her search for the truth.

This was a disappointing thriller. The characters are bland. Nell's running for political office seems to be simply a plot device, as there's little talk of politics in the novel. Adam appears only briefly before he disappears and is so obnoxious that it's hard to believe Nell would marry him. Dan Minor, a doctor looking for his long lost mother, is the most interesting character in the novel and I would have enjoyed the book more if it had been about him and not Nell.

This book could have used a good editor. Parts of the plot make no sense. Nell has show signs of psychic ability, including seeing her dead parents and auras around people, yet when her aunt pressures her to go see a psychic, Nell says she doesn't believe in psychic ability! Early on Lisa Ryan calls Nell; several chapters later Lisa has to call Nell's grandfather because she doesn't have Nell's phone number! And Nell twice has the same conversation with two cops about a safety deposit box key. This was so annoying that it ruined the flow of the book and the story lost all credibility for me. Finally, I figured out the twist early on, but it was never fully explained how it was carried out and several plot threads were left hanging.

For devoted Mary Higgins Clark fans only.

So I didn't realize I had already read this book until I started it. It was lucky then that I didn't actually remember what happened. It all eventually came back to me, the more I read, but it was still an entertaining read the second time around (a little Mary Higgins Clark humor for you there ... Because she has a book called The Second Time Around ... Okay I'm not hat funny).
There's a reason she's called the Queen of Suspense though and this book lives up to her title. It was action packed, suspenseful, with an ending you won't easily guess from the beginning.
It's definitely worth the read and she is one of my favorite mystery writers! 4 s Carla (Carla's Book Bits)537 128

As with many Mary Higgins Clark books, I come along for the ride because I enjoy the plot lines and characters that she develops. Before I Say Good-Bye was no different, with an interesting premise and the added intrigue of the paranormal, it was a fun and quick read. While I did figure out the "twist" early on the in the novel, I was still interested in Nell's story and the other points of view that we were presented along the way. The criticism I do have is that a lot of the time we are told about character relationships instead of shown them. Nell mentions how much she loves Adam, but every memory she thinks about it tainted. While this makes sense as the plot goes forward, I never got the sense that she loved Adam or had to mourn him at all. The same is true with her Grandfather Mac. She says he loves her over and over, but every one of their interactions was practically hostile. Don't tell me these things, show them to me, so I care about these characters. Another item that rubbed me the wrong way was that Winifred's Mother was only used as a plot device. Her two times in the novel, she gives Nell a piece of key information and then we never hear from her again. I mean she just gives a stranger the keys to her dead daughters apartment with no reservations. That rang false to me. However, it is a mystery novel, so I could get past that so that the plot can move forward. It was jarring enough that I made a note about it while I was reading though. Overall, a fun read for when you are traveling or between heavier reads. 2 s Victoria2,512 64

Mary Higgins Clark’s books always make me a bit nostalgic for summers when I was a child. My grandmother and I would trade these books back and forth, discussing and comparing notes on who had correctly guessed the plot. This novel, at thirteen years old, still counts as more recent novel and one that I hope my grandmother had a chance to read. It is certainly one of MHC’s better novels. Mixing together politics, psychics, and architecture, the plot unfolds in a fast-paced and entertaining fashion. The characters are all the typical mix of people that appear in the majority of her books. The romance that is woven in here is not one of her better ones, and borders on the distasteful. But otherwise, this is a fast and fun read with a plot that manages to toss in some unexpected surprises. Yes, those more familiar with Clark’s books may just guess the twists, but there are a few that will take even the diehard fans by surprise. It really is one of her stronger novels. mystery-thriller2 s Sarah Popolizio23

Let me start by saying I love Mary Higgins Clark! Even though her books all follow a similar pattern and plot, I enjoy them as a quick leisurely read. But I did not enjoy before I say goodbye, it was boring and slow. The love story was awful, Nell went real quick from I love my husband, to look at this new man, to maybe my marriage wasn’t any good. And of course she has to end up with the man so let’s make the husband the bad guy! The problem is, even if your husband turns out to be a psychopath it’s gonna take more than 2 weeks to move on! I found myself rolling my eyes and trying to push thru simply bc I hate leaving a book unfinished. This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full review2 s Barbara P366 3

A good read, although I didn't feel it was one of MHC's best novels. I appreciated the brief chapters that led to a number of interesting plots, characters that made me wonder just what direction she was
going with the novel. I was surprised with the ending, although it kind of confused me because one of
the characters that created a crime seemed a respectable medium with years of experience and related to another primary character who was likable, honest, respected - all through the story.

But, all in all, it was an interesting read and got me through a relaxing Thanksgiving.2 s Jeff Miller1,140 189

I have been really enjoying the last couple of her books I have read this year. In this novel there was one plot point I was highly suspicious of since the author is a faithful Catholic. Turned out it was good to be suspicious.2 s Jackie315 15

This was just kind of silly. The plot wasn't great and the writing was worse. I cannot fathom why Mary Higgins Clark has so many fans. This was the first and last book of hers I'll ever read. 2 s Bejohnson303 1 follower

not keen to read any of her books but was very pleasantly surprised. quick to read but very twisty story and hard to determine the ending until the end!2 s Gayle Noble1,733 32

Nell McDermot is just about to relaunch a career in local politics, when she is blindsided by the news that her husband, Adam Cauliff, is dead. His boat exploded in the midst of a business meeting being conducted onboard, & Adam, his secretary, a construction worker, & an investor are all presumed dead. As the detectives investigate the case, they begin to uncover evidence that Adam was not who Nell thought he was, a fact that could jeopardize her fledgling political career. Nell does her best to cope with the lifechanging news, but when she is approached by a psychic who claims to have been contacted by Adam from the other side, who tells her to beware the fifth man who was supposed to be onboard but was in a minor traffic accident, Nell wonders if the psychic could be telling the truth.

This seemed it might be a thriller with a paranormal edge, but unfortunately there was little that was thrilling about it. It's very pedestrian, slow, & predictable. You can pick out the possible future love interest from a mile away & we don't even find out how the explosion was engineered. This is not one of the author's best works & I would avoid unless you need something to lull you to sleep.2023-mounttbr-challenge gifted_donated_to_charity in-to-read-pile ...more1 Ámber H17 2

It's been decades that I had read a crime novel by American author Mary Higgings Clark. I am not even certain that I had not read this title before. Reading this novel was a nostalgic moment of my teenage years.

In this crime novel story, there are several victims with as many mobiles and suspects. While readers usually follow the investigation from the inspector's point of view only, readers follow several characters, whom each bring a piece of the puzzle. The leading character is Nell McDermont, grand daughter of a retired politician and wife of an architecte. The author reveals early details about Nell, which can lead to identify easily who's done it. However, it seems that the mystery evolves more on how the investigation comes together and the mobile crime.

The novel was published in 2000. Thus, since then crime novels had to become more enigmatic than this title. I still enjoyed reading it. usa1 Beth Besso132 11

This was a good read. I had a lot of notes written down in my reading journal of what I thought would happen. Some I had right and some I was way off. I did figure out who the perpetrator was, but it wasn't until I was close to the end and I still wasn't expecting it. Now that I think back on it, everything made complete sense and I should have seen it coming. The ending was full of action and a real page turner.1 Jacob Smith71

So this was a solid 4.5 star book. The book was extremely well written, this being the first Mary Higgins Clark book I’ve ever read I do agree that she is The Queen of Suspense. Although it started out slow and the character swapping got confusing in the first 50 pages Clark made up for it with a spectacular story. I will be reading more by her. 1 Katherine Karpicke20 2

This is your typical Mary Higgins Clark novel, and by that I mean is is excellent and very fun. There are a lot of twists and turns here, and I actually didn’t predict the ending until much further in the book than other novels. We are once again following a beautiful, intelligent woman as she loses her husband and has to figure out how and why he died. But along the way she has a few self-realizations and has to grapple with a lot of hard decisions. There are fun minor characters that you begin to care about, and I found myself wanting to finish this in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. mystery1 Edwina Callan1,792 57
