What a disappointment. Considering I loved the first book in the Rookie Club series, "Dead Center," I was hoping that the second one would be just as good (or at least close). I don't know why this novel is part of the Rookie Club series as the protagonist, Hailey Wyatt, never attended the monthly meeting. In fact, where the first book had multiple female players, this one only revolved around Hailey and her partner, Hal. Where the hell was Jamie? MacKenzie? They weren't even mentioned once. Also, the first novel portrayed Hailey's husband, John, as a really great husband and father; but this book showed him in a negative light when it came to their marriage. I also thought there were a lot of questions that were left unanswered. What happened to the in-laws? Did she find a new home for her and the girls? What happened with Sheila? Was Hailey's affair revealed to all? Is that why Bruce was leaving? Did she lose her job? More info would have been helpful; at least provide closure. In the end, a very disappointing read. kindle reviewed2 s Shelley122 1 follower

Good book

I have enjoyed this story line so far except that the proofreading in the Kindle edition is not very good. 1 Ted TaylerAuthor 65 books293

"Another winner"

I see no reason to alter my opinion from #1 in the series. Terrific story. Great female characters. Fast-paced action, tension-filled pages. What more do you want?1 Michael502 2

This second installment in The Rookie Club by Danielle Girard made me want to go around with my head down. My word, but the story featured a lot of gun shots. A lot of gunshot wounds, too. Read it and enjoy, but don't forget to duck.

I think I see where Girard is going with this. The first Rookie Club book featured every member of the club, but focused mainly on Jamie Vail, a sex crimes investigator. In this second installment, top billing goes to Hailey Wyatt, a homicide inspector who has had her share of family tragedy. The first of those aforementioned gun shots took out her husband John, who was becoming more distant from Hailey anyway as he mulled a run for public office. Hailey and her partner, detective Hal Harris, get wind that the rash of gunfire may have something to do with a cache of stolen guns. Of course, they investigate, but a whole lot of people want to prevent Hailey from learning the truth. They succeed in throwing up every conceivable uncertainty, and they even manage to drive an impenetrable wedge between Hailey and Hal. So she has to solve this case while mourning the loss of family members as well as the alienation from her best friend Hal. Some of Hailey's family members appear to be involved in the gun scheme, which puts her into a real quandary.

Her father in law, Jim, turned out to be a good friend and a big help to her. Jim himself is a state senator, so he wields some influence. But even Jim gets grazed by a bullet. Every character in the book seems to end up in actual cross hairs. The resolution is not the biggest surprise you'll ever get, but the mystery, while uneven in places, holds up pretty well. Quick out of the starter blocks

If you love a.good detective story, you're gonna love this one! It's the second of "The Rookie Club" books and even though there are some characters making a second appearance in this one, the story is distinctly different.
The main character, police inspector Hailey Wyatt is in the middle of making dinner when suddenly a gun shot rings out and the lives of Hailey and her family are thrust into tragedy and secrecy.
Now, the inspector's life is forever changed and still she must handle multiple puzzling homicide cases. At first, every case appears to be random, but soon similarities begin to immerge that tie one case to another. It seems that each new murder is somehow related to the last one until a winding, sinuous ribbon of crimes becomes too obvious to miss.
New clues that seem to refute previous theories pop up regularly and characters take turns as the most logical suspect. And all through the search for the why of the murders there's Hailey's secrets. Clues that are relevant are hidden, even from Hal, Hailey's partner.
To make things even more complicated, Hal intuits that things are being hidden from him by Hailey and those cause friction, loosening the partner bond of trus between Hailey and Hal.
Inciteful and moving along at breakneck speeds, Danielle Girade creates a sense of suspicion and fear that will make the reader running breathless at the unforeseen conclusion.
I loved it! I can't wait to begin #3 of the series!

Another great murder thriller. The Rookie Club series is one you’ll want to read. The writing is strong, the characters even stronger, and you never figure out ‘who done it’ until the author decides to clue you in. Oh, you may think it is one or the other and maybe there is some bad karma going on but you can’t be sure as to who pulled the trigger. Hailey Wyatt, a San Francisco police inspector is recovering a year after her husband’s murder in her father-in-law’s study. The case is still open with no suspects. Hailey has moved in with her two young daughters to be close to family. Jim and Liz Wyatt, dote on their grandchildren. So, Hailey is a lost soul. She is still trying to solve the murders of a couple from a year ago. The clues lead to Jim Wyatt and his involvement with some former gun control advocates. A button was found in the couple’s car and the button shows up in a mysterious letter dropped off at Jim’s house. There is much angst about Jim’s secrets and Hailey doesn’t want to share with her partner, Hal, because she’s afraid Hal would then discover her secret. Mixed in is her affair with Bruce Daniels, an IA officer in her own department. After her husband’s death, she has remorse about the affair and doesn’t know what to do. All she really knows is that she must keep her daughters safe. Her husband’s dying words haunt her. This is another terrific mystery with lots of turns and twists. I really enjoyed this entry in the series. I really felt Hailey's pain which was palpable. She lost her husband, she is ambivalent about her lover and she fears losing her partner. All of this while she is trying to be a homicide inspector and take care of her two young girls. Hailey has been keeping secrets from her partner. He feels the distance and begins to lose his trust in her. He believes she hiding information from him, which she is, but not for the reason he thinks There is a great deal of pain for both Hailey and Hal while they are investigating a difficult case that may be tied to her father-in-law. They have a big blow up but something happens that brings Hal to Hailey's side. She then shares everything. They are back on as partners. Hal is such a wonderful (but wounded and flawed character). He will not let anything happen to Hailey and he will be there with her to pick up the pieces. A very emotional read with a hopeful ending.finite-series Christine1,236 26

Review: The second installment of the Rookie Club (not sure the ladies even got together in this book, maybe once for a quick dinner?) focuses on homicide detective Hailey Wyatt. After her husband was tragically killed, she is finally back at work. But her partner Hal knows something is 'off.'

I d this book but I had a hard time believing Hailey and Hal were homicide detectives. They just seemed to have the worst communication skills (both actions explained but they acted teenagers) and zero detecting skills.

Wow!

This was a fantastic read! I love hailey and Hal’s characters so getting to see a book through their eyes is great. I can’t believe how many twists this story took, and how many answers to the first books unresolved questions were solved. I love the overlap of books. It makes it feel so real. As a mother so much of this book hit me hard, how hailey will do anything to protect her family. I never expected the outcome and won’t give it away either. What a great book! Can’t wait to pick up the next one! Felix7

Sucked in from the beginning

Tbh this is the second (maybe third) book I’ve read by Danielle Girard. I read the first book in The Rookie Club series and loved it. I felt I knew some of these characters and back stories from the previous book, I felt closer to them, more involved. I loved how this book kept me guessing. I wasn’t expecting a few things at the end of the book and feel I still need a few answers, but I’m hoping my curiosity on those will be averted in the next pieces of three series. Definitely worth the read. Kathy98 1 follower

Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book. I had a hard time liking Hailey. In the first book, Dead Center, she was fine and I was looking forward to her book. I had to force myself to finish the book. The very beginning was good and the end was good also. I figured out the bad guy in their first appearance and I was right. The characters I really d were her partner Hal and CSU Roger. Hoping the next book in the series is better. Gale Costa997 2

Good but confusing

I did not enjoy this book is much is I did the previous one. I found that there were too many characters which was confusing on who was who with the bad guys. I found I had to keep looking up the characters in the x-rays to remember their significance. I also was frustrated with Hailey and her crazy love life. I will continue the series though because overall I am enjoying these women in “The Rookie Club”. JoAnne Pegg107

Sometimes it is difficult to get a clear, clean shot in a gunfight.

This was a very good book, with murder, thrills, suspense and a serial killer. I recommend, for sake of continuity, that this Rookie Club series be read in order, 1 - 5. Also recommend persons who enjoy police action and thrills read this series. Gave a 5 star rating because it was awesomely written and kept my attention from front to back. Good story

Hailey lost her husband by gunfire. She went to live with her in-laws who were very supportive of her and the grandchildren. She grew to have a better relationship with her father-in-law until she uncovered his secret.

I found it hard to keep up with all the characters but overall it was a great book. Glenn LaRue348 2

Enjoyed the first novel in series, this one not so much.

As mentioned before the first book in series started a little slow, but it seemed to get better as the story progressed. This novel started slow and didn’t get better, the big reveal in the story came towards the end. That explanation made the rest of the story make sense, but by then it seemed out of place. Susoense Series

A lot of characters in this novel but on the whole a great read once I got into it. Suspense, sadness and a serial killer. Hailey and Hal have their hands full hunting a killer that is very close to home. Hailey will do anything to protect her daughters. As partners Hailey and Hal become very strained as Hailey is keeping secrets. Patricia Grogan Bugher607 4

Suspense thriller

One Clean Shot is book number two the Danielle Gerard series The Rookie Club. The Rookie Club is a group of women, all in law enforcement, who meet once a month or so for dinner and drinks to discuss cases. Each book focuses on a different group member. Scary, thrilling series. Suzanne Miller218

Entwined

Hailey has quite a journey through this book! The job is dangerous but more dangerous is the intrigue provided by her own family!! She keeps quiet, alienates her partner, gets shot, saves her children, and nails the bad guy! Lots of twists and turns tho keep you interested and turning pages!

Officially hooked.

Wow, this was a gripping suspenseful, and crazy book. So many connections to try and figure out. I am officially hooked on the rookie club and hope to get them all read in a week. Since they have been great so far I don't see that as a problem. Thank you Danielle Girard for this club! Evelyn Launderville497 3

Oh What A Tangled Web We Weave

Wyatt's husband is shot and dies in her father-in-law's den. She moves in to the in-laws home so someone is there to care for her daughters. She works crazy hours trying to solve several homicide cases which are connected but the connection can't be found. Kellie Whittam124

I d this book more than the first in the series. This one was full of action. At times it was difficult to keep up with all the characters but not too much of a problem.
I the continuation of strong female characters, though I think my favourite character in this book was Hal.

I admit to being a little perplexed by the high rating on "One Clean Shot," especially after reading it just after Louise Penny's outstanding new novel, "A World of Curiosities," but here we are. In short, this is a so-so thriller with a few too many coincidences and a relatively easy to identify villain #1 and a rather unbelievable villain #2. Holly Morey696 3

I have not read the first book in this series and that might have helped me with some of the characters, but I can say that this book can be a read alone. Hailey Wyatt and her partner Hal have been working a series of murders revolving around gun sales. When Hailey's husband is murdered, she starts to grow apart from her partner. She is hiding things from him and the number of possibly related murders keep growing. I read this because it was free and I may consider reading the first book to see what I missed.
Upon reading the 1st book, I would suggest reading it first. It explains quite a bit about the characters Katherine264 13

Great series! This is book 2 in the Rookie Club series and centers on Hailey, who we met in book 1, as she deals with a case that seems to circle around her father-in-law. Great characters and an extremely fast paced plot make this a fun read.

I recommend reading these books in order because they build on each other, but I don't think it's strictly necessary.2023 Ken Bour366

I had a much tougher time enjoying this installment than #1 in the series. There seemed to be too many characters and, for a good portion of the story, I found myself lost. I managed to finish the novel and, since I had received three Rookie Club books in one Kindle Unlimited rental, I decided to push on to #3 -"Dark Passage."kindle-unlimited Micki ClarkAuthor 1 book5

Good read, poor editing

I enjoyed the book and the story, but there were several clear editing gaffes. A few times it was there were missing sentences--and Bruce's last name was different in the first book. bonnie kirchner1,406 6

One Clean Shot

This is a great series. Each book is this series has gotten better. It is a very good thriller. It keeps you in suspense until the very end. I highly recommend this book and this series. Dana Groulx53 1 follower

Slow Going

I had a hard time getting into this one. It finally picked up the pace about 3/4 the way through. For some reason, it just didn’t hold my interest. I’m not into guns or politics for that matter. I prefer serial killer stories. It wasn’t bad, just not my cup of tea. Kaylee Nizza382 2
