John Farrow returns in the sequel to Gary Martin’s SUNSPOTS.

An unexpected trip turns everything on its head, and opens his eyes to new ideas and possible futures.
Now, John is broken. The last six months have taken their toll. His ship, SUNSPOT II, is badly damaged and limping back to Earth. He has no idea what will happen when he gets there, and no idea of the new hell awaiting him …

I’ve read less than a handful of sci fi fiction books in my life and generally I have enjoyed every one I’ve read, even though it’s not a genre I normally read. I was lucky enough, several months back, to win a copy of “Sunspots” written by Gary Martin in the Goodreads Giveaways and more recently given the opportunity to read the second in the series “Forever Dark”.
I usually find sci fi stories difficult to picture as they’re so unique and generally only in the minds of the writer but Gary Martin ensures the reader completely understands the scene he’s portraying, by his descriptive narrative and attention to detail.
Set two hundred years in the future, I enjoyed “Sunspots 1” and found it a very realistic and probable scenario whereby a battered old cargo spaceship takes the Earth's rubbish and dumps it in the Sun's corona. The sequel follows on from the first and although this works as a stand-alone, I do feel it would be beneficial to read the first to acquaint yourself with the characters and the reason unly hero, John Farrow, finds himself in his badly damaged spaceship limping and drifting back to Earth.
I loved the first person narrative told by John and I especially enjoyed reading his recollection of his youth in the opening of the book. I really felt a connection with him and loved his able character and felt it was someone who was realistic and convincingly portrayed.
I laughed, cringed and was horrified in equal measure at certain points in the book. There’s an excellent plot to the story that literally never stops and is a truly rollercoaster of a ride. I read this book nigh in one sitting and felt it convincing played out a sci fi movie on tv. Due to the fact I’m not an major sci fi fan I was pleased that it wasn’t too futuristic and beyond belief but was completely understandable and comprehendible. I also d how in John’s early years, there was references back to the present. The author Gary Martin is a very intelligent and imaginative author who was a pleasure to read.
All in all this is a fun and highly entertaining read that keen sci fi readers and those just looking for something a bit different to their normal genre will enjoy and I would certainly recommend both the author and his books. There is some bad language and crude references throughout, so the series may not be suitable for the very young but generally, young, old, male and female a should enjoy this fantastic, fast paced trip into space!

John Farrow's career as an interstellar binman has taken a decided turn for the worst. Drifting through space on a dying ship with a dying sun behind them, what else could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot as it turns out. Despite his apparent ineptitude, Farrow manages to shoot and swear his way from cliffhanger chapter to cliffhanger chapter. Yes, there is swearing; a f*cking lot of swearing as it happens. He's the shift manager on a refuse ship; of course he f*cking swears. As does the rest of his crew and the lowlifes they meet. So if you are averse to curse words, you might want to steer clear. If, me, you barely notice the potty mouths because you are one yourself, then this is a rollercoaster read (NB - don't read it on a rollercoaster, it'll make you sick).
I read it in two sittings, only stopping because I needed to sleep and go to work in between, which was an inconvenience if I'm honest. If I have a criticism, it is that it is possibly too action-packed. I kept thinking that the poor bloke needed a rest but Gary Martin throws trauma after trauma at his protagonist. John Farrow is going to need some serious counselling after this. Assuming he makes it out alive (saying no more...).2 s Ramona141
