Medical Thriller

An ER doctor working hard in the ER comes across a girl with an obvious fracture that was probably attributed to someone else. This is where the story begins. Trust me, there is so much more to this book! One circumstance leads to many more. Buckle your seatbelt because this is quite a ride.

AJ, known as Doc is a doctor working in an emergency room of a very busy hospital. One evening a young woman presents with a broken wrist but Doc has a suspicion there may be more to this story so asks a police friend to speak with her to see if she is really ok.

This is the beginning of a great and very entertaining book. Once I picked it up I found it very hard to put down. An excellent main character that I hope to see in future books along with a cast of very well thought out characters that support Doc's journey. Really there wasn't anything I didn't about it, fast paced, incredibly humorous and fun and also a plot that really keeps the reader engaged throughout the book.

I will definitely be looking this author up to see what else he has written, I read that he is a doctor in real life and I think when you have that background behind you it makes the book much more realistic and believable. I was a nurse for many years and I could definitely relate to scenes in the book regarding the long hours worked and how hospital administration puts many things above patient care.

I was lucky enough to receive an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review. Last Patient of the Night is a Wild Mouse coaster ride, racing along the track with sharp twists and turns, looking it's headed for disaster, but somehow always staying on course to deliver an exhilarating and satisfying ride. I enjoyed it from start to finish.arc brw5 s Kelsey Rhodes1,048 23

4.5/5 stars! I am frustrated by how good this book was. Why? Because the cover does not live up to the strength of the story. Hopefully, the author will consider adjusting the cover because the content was amazing. This is the first entry in a thriller series by Gary Gerlacher. I was surprised by how developed and enthralling the story was. I started the book with zero expectations and couldn't put it down. 10 extra points for having a main side character of a dog. Doc is a great leading man for this series and I can't wait to see what is next.

Great start to a promising series. “Doc” is on of those characters you can’t help but . His superhero mentality shines through as he fights for those who can’t defend themselves. A Ukrainian mob is his main target, but he can’t help taking a shot at the hospital administrator. Looking forward to the next installment.I received an advance copy of the book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review.3 s Lynda Stevens274 10

AJ Docker, known by nickname Doc, is the right person to have around in an emergency. He rescues a badly injured skier on the slopes whilst on holiday with an impromptu tracheotomy.

Doc works in ER. When a young woman turns up for the second time with some severed fingertips, this time well beyond saving, something is triggered in Doc. With his sidekick Tom, who happens to be a cop, he vows to get to the bottom of who is responsible for this sadistic murder.

Soon he stirs up a hornet's nest of Ukrainian gangsters. But the good doctor is no ordinary doc, he knows how to fight and handle a gun. He is also lucky. His irritating neighbour for exam proves to possess unsuspected talents at just the right moment.

He is not the kind of man who will back off or call for backup at quite the right time. This leads him into some extraordinarily dangerous and nail-biting adventures.

Whether or not the author was also a detective with a black belt in dirty fighting is unknown, but the loyalty and camaderie that exists between all workers on the front line mopping up after life's casualties of corruption and evil seems real enough in the telling. The writer, as a doctor, does also have an agenda in pointing out that bureaucracy and middle management, probably are strangling the life out of the funds that hospitals need to actually treat people rather than pushing for accountability.

This was a truly engaging and thrilling read. Yes, in real life, those who survive the front line do use humour to survive, though a hero such as Docker still seems a little too good to be true. However, the feel-good factor
makes this story uplifting ultimately, as well as entertaining.3 s Travis Tougaw5 3

Last Patient of the Night is a fun, fast-paced thriller. Gary Gerlacher’s debut novel introduces us to A.J. “Doc” Docker, an ER physician with a quick, sarcastic wit and a mind for solving mysteries. When one of his patients dies under suspicious circumstances, Doc makes it his mission to discover what really happened and find justice for her, regardless of the risks. Smartly plotted, loaded with memorable characters, and deftly mixing action and humor, Last Patient of the Night keeps the pages turning until the end.3 s Laura Felty71 1 follower

Interesting story

This one is a bit far fetched but a fun read. Typical hospital politics and mobster stuff. Good writing, character building, and plot.2 s Denise Stannis43

Great Thriller

This was a really good book! Great storyline that kept you interested. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.2 s Caitlin Yarbrough7

This is one of those books that I absolutely could not put down. I read it in two days, although it easily could have been read in one sitting if I didn’t have to work. It was fast paced, kept me on my toes and even had me giggling at some point. I love dark humor and sarcasm and there is a bit of that. AJ Docker aka “Doc” is a physician in an ER and let me tell you that the hospital drama/humor in this book could not be more realistic! I’m a nurse and I audibly laughed out loud about the hospital politics. 5 stars and definitely recommend.2 s Sue Hagen59 1 follower

It was an exciting book that I couldn’t put down with a main character you just love. Beyond excited for the next two books!2 s Anirudh Kukreja219 2

I'm gonna take some time reviewing this one.

1. The story was alot of fun and the pace was really good.
2. The protagonist started off as a self absorbed douche but eventually he really grew on me (maybe that was the author's intention, if yes then kudos)
3. All the characters were extremely able, making you vouch for them.

The only thing that I disd about this novel was that the author had a Hollywood level plot armour: he was fit, a high IQ doctor, a God in hand to hand combat, Oliver Queen's reiteration with his aim and has the super power of... seduction apparently. Just seemed a bit too good to be true.

In any case, on to the next one.1 Carol-Ann Rudy13 1 follower

FUN READ!

What can I say? Loved the fast pace of the story, loved the characters, and most of loved laughing out loud at the humor tucked neatly into all of it!1 Lillian Green4

This book had great on Goodreads. One of the reasons I wanted to read the book, as I had never read anything by this author. I got about 40% in and just could not get into the book. I d Dr. Docker’s character but something about a doctor crime fighting just didn’t appeal to me. I absolutely hate leaving bad and honestly I think this is well written, just not up my alley.

Readable for quick fun.

Fun reading. Main character, Dr. Docker, is similar to Baldacci's Archer: fearless, independent, foul-mouthed and irreverent. I'll rate 3.5 rounded to 4.
Recommended for a fast bit of fun.

I’ve been waiting so long….

I medical thrillers. This one was different though because it was funny! I also enjoy police related stories, so I got it all. Great plot and a happy ending.1 Vannessa11

This novel is predictable, poorly written, full of cliches and tedious repetition. 1 Josephine12

*DNF/could NOT finish*

If you egotistical, narcissistic, self-centered characters, this is the book for you! One of the downright worst books I've read so far. Not only do you have a white, male main character who is a Marty Sue (Mary Sue), but the author is the exact same way! Our main character, Doc, is an ER physician who can literally do no wrong. Everyone (and I mean everyone) absolutely loves and cherishes him. Women are falling at his feet, he drives a fancy Mercedes, and owns his own place in the downtown Houston, TX area...ooo sooo impressive. Didn't know I would need an extra pair of underwear to read this book.

The beginning does have an exciting medical performance by Doc and was rather intriguing, unfortunately, that doesn't last long because turns out, Doc is a wannabe cop! Which means he can literally investigate the murder of a patient that died on him who made a minor impact on him when she came to the ER the first time (alive). Thus, he believes since she came to his ER and he has a cop friend with a cool cop K-9, he can interview and go to points of interest directly related to the victim. It's downright creepy.

To add the cherry on top of this shit cake, we have the racist and sexist undertones. Our white main character/author (because they are the same person) encounter multiple instances where minorities are threatening him, or others, and he has to play superman. Of course, our character is a modern day 'Cassanova' so every woman in the whole city of Houston falls to her knees for him. Finally, there's the blatant rape scene. I did not realize a medical thriller would need a rape scene with gross details for its plot. Is there even plot or is it just the male fantasy of how women perceive successful men? Oh, and surprise, surprise...the rapist is not a native English speaker. It seems the main character/author can only view other non-successful, non-white persons as 'evil'!

In short, this author and book is one of the most disgusting pieces of literature I've had the unfortunate opportunity to lay my eyes upon. To make it worse, this author still actively practices medicine and is allowed to provide care for the general public. I can't believe this author has a medical license still. It's one of those regular nights in the emergency room of the Ben Taub Hospital. AJ Docker, otherwise known as Doc to his colleagues and friends, is putting in his due and looking forward to the end of his shift when he ends up with a mysterious girl who looks she has been tortured. Doc does his best but is unable to save her life. Her death leads him to investigate how she ended up in the emergency room in the first place. Little does he know that his inquisitive nature is about to lead him into a world of prostitution and blackmail where human lives have no value in Gary Gerlacher’s Last Patient of the Night.

Gary Gerlacher's easygoing approach to telling the story is evident in every aspect of this riveting crime novel, Last Patient of the Night. He introduces us to his characters using a casual approach when unfolding their origin stories. His depiction of the hospital scene is quite accurate as he goes the extra mile to make this story feel as authentic as possible using precise medical parlance and operating procedures, not to mention some of the weird slang the staff are throwing around. His ability to alternate humor with suspense creates the perfect recipe for a riveting read which is difficult to put down. I especially the way he casually inserts modern money laundering methods into a deceptively simple story. When it comes to the crime genre, Gerlacher's novel is in a class of its own. N.J. GallegosAuthor 10 books74

Gerlacher uses his expertise as an ER physician to craft a fantastic thriller.

The book follows AJ Docker, an ER doc in Houston, whose last patient of the night comes back hours later brutally beaten and maimed. Unable to resuscitate her, Docker, along with his police officer friend and his K-9, embark on a quest to find out who did this and why.

One of my favorite parts of Gerlacher's tale was his use of humor throughout. In our line of work, we often resort to dark humor as a coping mechanism and he perfectly displays this as well as uses humor to otherwise defuse an oftentimes bleak situation.

Pick up Last Patient of the Night if you enjoy well written medical thrillers that perfectly build the tension with each chapter. Don't start it before bedtime though because you'll find yourself plowing through the entire book and losing precious beauty sleep.

The author sent me a paperback ARC and I hope to receive more from this series! 4 s Cam TorrensAuthor 3 books65

I'm a good test case for this brilliant new series because I read an advance copy of #2 (Faulty Bloodline) before reading Gary Gerlacher's excellent debut. Although presented as a series, these books can definitely be read as stand-alones.

At the risk of dating myself, I'll just say Last Patient is Fletch (the movie) meets Quincy (the TV series) and Jack Reacher (the books.) AJ "Doc" Docker is a hilarious, smart, one-man wrecking crew with occasional backup from a neighbor, a dog, and a cop who's mastered the one-finger salute.

When confronted with injustice on the examination table and in the back offices, Doc gets to work. The reader needs to hang on because Doc is more of a BAFERD (read the book!) outside the ER than in!

My favorite thread is the bonus satire on doctor/male/high-school-humor stereotypes. 5-stars!adult brw fiction ...more1 Christa10

Rating: 4.5

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I received a signed copy of "Last Patient of the Night" as a free Goodreads giveaway. This is my honest review. As an ER healthcare worker for the past 23 years, as well as a huge fan of murder mysteries, I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down (I had it read in 2 days). I loved the character, charming, witty, and no-nonsense ER doctor, AJ Docker a nd his incessant need for solving a murder mystery involving one of his patients. I respect the author for his blend of "on-the-edge-of-your-seat" suspense and healthcare knowledge (both truthful and humorous at times). The ending was perfect, and left me wanting to read more about AJ. I am so excited to get my hands on the second book in the series, "Crimson Betrayal." Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this book. Gail OlmstedAuthor 8 books228
