Ensayo ameno y divulgativo sobre las principales fuentes literarias de la historia del Rey Arturo y los caballeros de la Mesa redonda. Es un resumen interesante que permite al lector tener las claves para empezar a leer el ciclo artúrico. Eso sí, hay que tener cuidado porque cuando García Gual trata la obra de Chrétien de Troyes hace un resumen completo de sus obras así que mejor leer solo los primeros párrafos para que no te destripe la trama.

En ocasiones pierde el ritmo (p.e. cuando dedica 20-30 paginas a resumir el argumento de varios de los libros) pero por norma general se lee de forma agradable.2 s Raúl 104 13

Beautiful synopsis of the major Arthurian works that I consider essential to any course on the subject. The author manages to distill even the labyrinthine works of the French vulgate cycle, and I truly applaud the judicious choices he makes in what he chooses to cover; however, there are some errors, and one in particular stands out: The author makes mention of the sword Excalibur, in his summary of Malory, as being the sword drawn from the stone and which ends in water. For anyone who has read Malory, one knows this is not true. It is an unfortunate error as even burgeoning Arthurian students will be able to pick this one out right away. There are other errors in the book, which I suspect may have been due to an editorial sleight of hand, as the author is quite adept in succinctly conveying the spirit of each writer from Chretien de Troyes to T.H. White. Additionally, I applaud the author for sidestepping less worthy Arthurian retellings in his coverage of the modern period as many of these works are noticeably inferior and the plethora of retellings that come at us in films and books each year seem to be a perfect illustration of that law of ever diminishing returns. Un excelente ensayo sobre el ciclo artúrico, desde sus inicios como tradición oral celta, las influencias del catoliciscmo (y lo más importante, el porque de la influencia), los primeros escritos, como se fueron agregando las demás historias a la historia principal.

Este es un libro que permite tener una visión clara de como nace y el significado del ciclo artúrico a traves de los años.

Una prosa sencilla y, hasta divertida hacen que este libro sea muy ágil de leer. Jose Vidal154 3
