Sinopsis

Overview: In the village of Steynham St Michael, the old Strict and Particular Chapel is, at last, undergoing renovation, to the delight of the locals, who believe it will prove useful as a tourist attraction. The renovations have however been dogged by the sightings of mysterious hooded figures ... The newly-decorated interior is then found defaced by a mysterious message in red paint, which prompts a call to the police. DI Falconer and DS Carmichael of the Market Darley CID make an initial visit, and believe that the unexplained events at the Chapel may be the work of a cult. When a new DC arrives on secondment, Falconer immediately sends him on an undercover fact-finding mission, while spending his own time trying to lay his hands on a local drug dealer. Then a body is found in the chapel, and events begin to spiral out of control ... Strict and Peculiar is the seventh instalment in Andrea Frazer's Falconer Files, a detective series chock-full of picture-postcard villages, dastardly deeds, and a delightful slice of humour.

The Old Strict and Peculiar chapel in Steynham St Michael is being restored in the hope that it will become a tourist attraction. When the walls are defaced by graffiti in Greek DI Harry Falconer and DS Davey Carmichael go to investigate. In addition strange hooded figures have been seen at night in the area though the person who reported them may have been seeing things as she is a heavy drinker.

When a body is found in the chapel with more writing on the newly painted walls the investigation becomes serious and a newly seconded DC is sent undercover to the local college to see if he can infiltrate some of the religious groups there to see if they might be responsible.

In addition there is an ice cream van going round the are which is selling drugs rather than ice cream and Harry wants to find out where it is based so that they can arrest the people involved in the trade. This is an interesting story involving a quite unpleasant group of people who are definitely not what they seem.

I found it an interesting and enjoyable read - and I am enjoying reading this well written and at times quite amusing series. If you want something fairly light in the crime genre with able police characters then give this series a try. It is best to read the series in order though they can be read as a standalone novels.1 Julie1,294 1 follower

Another Falconer Success!

I love the characters and the cats! A new love interest, a truly horrible villain, and an appealing love interest. Great book, I'm looking forward to the next. Rowena Onions262 1 follower

I really this series, not so much for the plots as for the developing characters and relationshps within them Debbie372 8

Not a bad seventh instalment in the Falconer Files series. The murder(s) were a bit predictable. My favourite thing, as it has been with the series thus far, is the character development of the two detectives and their families. I'm still not really a fan of the author putting in asides, and this time she even had one of the characters refer to her as Mrs. Frazer, which I didn't at all. The characters themselves keep me coming back for more, though, as I become more and more involved with their lives. ChristinaAuthor 1 book23

Cosy crime novel centred around graffiti found on a church wall and the subsequent police investigation into the dead bodies discovered there.

Although the premise was interesting, I did find the plot a little too predictable, repetitive and aimed at those with a particular sense of humour and over a certain age. However, if you're a die-hard (pun intended so you get the drift) fan of Miss Marple or MC Beaton, this may be for you.
