BLACK CATS & BAD LUCK
A Foxberry Falls Cozy Mystery
by Feen Cooper
????????

Jessica is moving from the city being suspected of murder and exonerated to a small town having trouble right from the start. Can her life get any worse? Oh yes, yes it can. The realtor gave her the wrong key to her new place so she had to break in. She finds the realtor unalived…no wonder he wouldn’t answer his phone. Police show up and immediately arrest her. Wow! She’s a suspect once again to another death. Deja vu for sure! With some detective work of her own and a mysterious black cat, she takes this in her own hands to find out what happened.
Amusing, mysterious, clean and enjoyable. A fast paced short read that will keep you entertained. I’m loving reading Fern Cooper’s books. They are a palate cleanser from the dark romance & fantasy books that are all the hype. These books are cute and whimsical. I recommend her work for all ages to read.

Funny and Entertaining
Jessica lives in Chicago. Jessica is a bit sassy and funny. Jessica is having a series of unfortunate events. First, she finds her boss (who she had secretly wished dead) dead in his office. She ends up with blood all over her, she is holding her phone talking with the 9-1-1 operator when a group of cops come out of the elevator with guns drawn and pointing right at her. She is arrested but eventually cleared of her boss’ murder. She decides she needs a change. She moves to Foxberry Falls, Virginia (population 1587, or 1588 counting her) to open an accounting and tax office. When her Uber driver pulls over in front of her new home/office she is quite surprised to find that it doesn’t look anything the pictures. She hopes the inside is better. She leaves the car and goes to the door. The keys she was given don’t work, so she walks around the building trying a second door which also doesn’t work. She finally finds a window and hoists herself through it. The place is dark and the lights don’t work. She stumbles around in the dark and eventually trips over something. That something is a dead body. Suddenly, the cops are bursting in, guns drawn. “I’ve been down this road before. I don’t where this is going.”

Ms. Cooper has a way with words. And with characters. Jessica is funny and sassy and keeps you entertained throughout the book. I laughed at the things she said and at the way she handle everything that was thrown at her. The story is fun and fast paced. A quick read that will hold your attention to the end. If you are looking for something quick, entertaining and funny I highly recommend this book.

I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.

The last conversation Jessica had with her boss was not friendly and now he's dead and Jessica is the first person to find him. She's arrested but after being cleared of the murder, Jessica moves to a place where she can start again. This plan doesn't work out, however, as Jessica finds herself in an all-too-familiar situation when she finds her realtor dead in her locked new place. Having had to break the windows to get in, she's immediately on the top of the suspect list and Jessica blames the cat. The sheriff believes Jessica is not the murderer so she's free to go, and she uses this time to investigate. This is an extremely short and quick read so Jessica provides every detail about her ordeal from the moment she found her boss dead right through to the end. The book is also written in the present tense so readers read the narrative in real time. This is a personal pleasant way to read since nothing in the future can be foreseen and readers learn what happens at the same time as the characters. As a result, readers can follow Jessica's investigation.

Jessica found her boss dead in Chicago, became the prime suspect, she was exonerated of said murder then moves to Foxberry Falls to start over to only be given the wrong keys to her new home. Jessica decides to break in to her new place thinking it's ok because she owns the place but while trying to find a light a black cat meows and scares her into falling on the realtor and then the police show up and she is arrested not only for murder but breaking and entering. Jessica is sitting in interrogation with the sheriff when Jessica's attorney walks in and then they find out about a crash that happened and a gun so the sheriff lets her go but tells her to stay in town. Jessica finds a place to stay until her place is ready and after talking to her new landlord she decides she has to find the killer so she has piece of mind but being that Foxberry Falls is a small town she is causing some drama and causing people to mistrust her, so her lawyer takes her to lunch to talk to her. Jessica has to figure out what to do with the townsfolk while looking for the killer.

“…I may be a Chatterbox when I’m nervous, but I’m not about to confess to a crime I didn’t commit.”
Murder seems to be a normal occurrence happening around Jessica Ryan at every turn. Beginning in Chicago & finding her deceased boss; she has now moved to the small town of Foxberry Falls, VA, ready to begin a new business. Fortunately for her finances, the building comes complete with an apartment up top.

Before the skies open up to saturate her, a black cat circles around her, rubbing in & out of her ankles. The cat runs around to another side of the property just in time for Jessica to make a run for it, breaking into a window for shelter. As she slightly trips over something, and her eyes adjust, all she sees is the dead realtor’s body in the middle of the floor. And yet again, she finds herself in the unfamiliar territory of the Police Station in her new town.

This mystery story is a fun one, & includes what seems to be a magical black cat, a rough around the edges sheriff, a boisterous attorney, stories of ghosts, and a very nosy small town. Will she ever be welcomed?

Having been cleared of murder and the real culprit brought to justice, Jessica still finds it impossible to get another job. thinking about places she visited in the past, Jessica decides to move to a small town, Foxberry Falls, to set up her own accountancy and tax business. Having bought a shop and flat above, she is excited to start her new life, but finds she doesnt have the right key to get in. Finding an open window, a black cat appears and jumps through ahead of her, so she is trying to figure out where the cat went them bam!, flat on the floor face to face with her (dead) realtor. Can this really be happening, again? .......
The Sherrif is coming up for re-election, so a quick resolution on this case would really help him win.... and Jessica has history ....
This is a fast-paced, exciting, and funny read. A real page turner and a brilliant start to a new series from this excellent author. I highly recommend this book. “Black Cats & Bad Luck: An Irresistibly Addictive Cozy Mystery (Foxberry Falls Cozy Mysteries) by Fern Cooper
I was given for free “Black Cats & Bad Luck: An Irresistibly Addictive Cozy Mystery (Foxberry Falls Cozy Mysteries) by Fern Cooper and am writing a review because I genuinely love the author’s books and would not accept money in exchange for reading her books!
Jessica, moved from California to Cleveland because she got accused of killing people she did not kill. She bought an apartment in a smaller town in VA and climbed through a window and landed on her dead landlord. She had 2 pot smoking leftover hippy children and a black cat who give her support and try to clear her name. Will they succeed? Will the black cat continue to find her and help her? Will she get blamed for another murder? Very exciting. As a reader it is often hard to predict how Jessica will get out of trouble. Great book!!!!!

Jessica escapes the big city having been proven innocent of murder the walks straight into another dead body and is arrested once again.

The Sheriff wants a quick result and here's one right before his eyes, let's hope Jessica has a good lawyer. Hmmmm well she's in need and with plenty of twists and turns and some digging she certainly makes a stir. The answer was a surprise and I loved the reveal. The Sheriff had some surprises and you will have to work out if he's good news or bad in the long run.

Though this is a short read it's great fun and I really enjoyed it some laughs and intrigue but mainly just a great way to spend some hours. 5 stars because it made me smile, and I really enjoyed it. I hope you do as well. Chere Gruver160 2

This short story is filled with one mystery after another!

After being cleared of murdering her boss in Chicago, Jessica had no choice but to pick up stakes and move somewhere else. Even though she didn’t do it and was cleared, her reputation was destroyed. So, imagine her surprise when she ends up climbing into her new home through a window because the key she has won’t work—not technically breaking and entering since she owns it—and stumbles over another dead body! Definitely a fast-paced story that kept me reading just to find out who did what to whom and why. I love all the quirky characters too and can’t wait to learn more about the black cat.

purrfect Cosy mystery

This was a great fast paced story, that grabbed my attention from the start , it carried the pace very well for a short story. Why does the black cat only come out of the shadows when Jessica Ryan is alone? Having left threat of jail-time behind in Chicago , she gets to her new home but can’t get in , stupid Realtor! This black cat shows up and the rest is Mystery…. Brilliant immersive, cosy murder mystery story. Very good descriptions and an easy flow writing style that had me lost in this small town awhile . Can’t wait to spend more time with these engaging characters. Jeanne1,100 6

Black Cats and Bad Luck is book #1 in the Foxberry Falls Cozy Mystery series by Fern Cooper.

I have never read anything by Fern Cooper before, OMG this was a cute cozy mystery. Jessica is moving from Chicago to Foxberry Falls Virginia; she wants to start over as her own boss. She receives the keys to her new building in the mail, but none of the keys opens the locks; so she climbs in an open window. The place is dark and she trips over something; that happens to be the dead body of her real estate agent. The cops burst in with guns a blazing. Is Jessica found guilty or is something more sinister going on? Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Cooper!!received-advanced-readers-copy fred jones1,374 8

With a suspicious sheriff, town gossip her only hope is to find the real killer. I really enjoyed this book. Short but with really good characters, I d Jessica, lots of attitude. The story is fun, well written and begging for a longer sequel. Fern Cooper is a new author to me and a good one. I initially received an ARC copy but then bought the book anyway. Kat Taylor1,655 19

This is the beginning of a new series with an array of vibrant, colorful and quirky characters that will draw you in but of course it wouldn't be a murder mystery without a deadly schemer hidden in plain sight causing all sorts of mayhem. The characters will draw you in but it's the enticement that the plot carries you throughout with its intrigue, lies ,betrayal and murder. This cozy mystery is soo well written so as a cozy mystery with murder you'll certainly want to read this and get aquainted with the delightful heroine and her black cat. Acquire " Black Cats and Bad Luck" today so you yourself can enjoy it as much as I have. Kat cozey-mystery Cat B.554 4

This was a very quick little read with an interesting mystery. When you are found innocent of murdering your boss, why not relocate to somewhere quiet. Somewhere you can start over and decompress. Sounds good, yes? Jessica sure thought so. Well, until ... This was an entertaing read, mayhaps the set up for a new series. An intriguing murder, eclectic supporting cast and a cat that seems to have adopted the protagonist. Another nicely written light-hearted tale from Fern Cooper, who excels in this.

Bad luck seems to follow Jessica! After moving to a small, quiet town after being falsely accused of murder of her boss in Chicago, Jessica wants a quiet life but unfortunately it's not to be. She stumbles upon the dead body of her realtor and is arrested for the murder by the local sheriff. A great story, some quirky characters and of course the mysterious black cat. I was fortunate enough to get an ARC copy of this book and I have to admit it's a great start to a new series and I can't wait to read more. Sherri Moore189 4

This was a crazy story that more than one thing going at a time. Jessica comes to Foxberry Falls to open an accountants/tax office and the realtor had mailed her keys that didn't work. Enter a black cat that leads her into an open window in the back and first thing that happens is that she falls over a dead man, that just happened to be her realtor. She's taken in for murder and from there things really get strange. Fun story with lots of twists that make it fun to read. Sharmani Jayaram900 16

Jessica Ryan finds the dead body of Owen the realtor in her office and before she calls for help is arrested by Sheriff Bailey for the murder. She moves to a small town - not even a Starbucks there!
She gets to the place she is going — with a cab. He sticks around because it is so lonely. Tries to open the door - key does not work! She phones the agent . . . . and she breaks in when he does not answer, Only to find a dead body!!!!! And that starts a whole series of bad luck!! This is really a great book that will keep you guessing, I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and comments are my own. G48

Jessica's introduction into town is a little different than she expected, or is it history repeating itself?
This book is a great introduction into Jessica and the town of Foxberry Falls. Great characters with a little bit of spunk, and a fun storyline. It is a fairly quick read, perfect for a cozy afternoon. I truly enjoyed it.

From the first chapter to the last, the action is such that you do not want to put this one down.
Thinking to start over, purchasing a storefront and place to live, Jessica moves into a small town in Virginia. She does not expect finding a dead body to follow her there.
With so many twists, turns, right people and wrong, you will not be disappointed. Dianne Hall434 3

Fun and entertaining cozy.

This is a fun and entertaining cozy that I enjoyed reading. I felt for Jessica as she was pinpointed for a murder and the target of local gossip that was unfounded. I loved how she faced the town head on and held her head high as she proved her innocence.

I read this book as part of an advance reader team and am providing my honest opinion. Shari135 1 follower

This was a fast read with a lot of content. The characters were great & left you wanting more. Jessica moves to a new town, just to have troubles follow her. Somehow a black cat seems to be involved & has claimed her to be its new owner. Is this mysterious cat an omen or a good luck charm? This book will not disappoint. ABurch74172 1 follower

If you are looking for a good mystery but don’t have a lot of time, this is the perfect book for you. Jessica doesn’t have much good luck, but the way she deals with what she encounters shows her strength and character. I really enjoyed this book.
