10 Things I Hate About Prom de Elle Gonzalez Rose

de Elle Gonzalez Rose - Género: English

Sinopsis

There are more than 10 things to hate about prom, but the worst thing is when your lovable best friend wants to go with someone else. Don't miss this sweet, charming rom-com from the author of Caught in a Bad Fauxmance!
Ivelisse Santos has had Joaquin Romero’s back since their first playdate. Not just next-door neighbors, they’re platonic soulmates.
At least, that’s what Ive thinks, until Joaquin decides to ask Tessa Hernandez, the same girl who stole Ive’s boyfriend, to prom. Sure, the head cheerleader and the star baseball player going to prom together makes more sense than Joaquin and Ivelisse—leader of tech crew—would. But that doesn’t mean it should actually happen.
What’s worse, Joaquin wants Ivelisse’s help planning an elaborate promposal. As much as she wants to say no, she'll take all the quality time...

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Just Caught in a Bad Fauxmance, 10 Things I Hate about Prom is the perfect read for those who love vivid and bright writing, chaotic main characters, witty remarks and banter, AND perfect Latin rep.

I flew through the pages while reading this story. Ive is a messy narrator, and that might be because she has a lot going on. Working at her Tio’s restaurant, her mom dating again, college applications, prom, etc. And, of course, her best friend Joaquin. He is adorable and everything a teen wishes for in a friend. And maybe in a boyfriend too, even though Joaquin wants to take someone else as his dare to prom.

I loved both Ive and Joaquin, but I have to admit that I didn’t laugh as much as I hoped I would. I blame my previous read. But I’m pretty sure lots of people will love this lighthearted and funny story, and therefore, I round my 3.5 rating up to 4 stars.

Thank you, Random House Children’s and NetGalley, for this ARC!

I loved the flip on 10 Things I Hate About You!!! This is basically if Michael and Cameron had been best friends for years and Michael secretly loved Cameron but now Cameron is obviously pining for Bianca (who can only now start dating bc her dad lifted the ban). In the past Chastity and Bianca were best friends, but some shit went down right around the time that Joey and Bianca hooked up…while Joey was dating Michael. So now Michael and Chastity are good friends and Bianca and her don’t speak.

The only people missing were Kat and Patrick…which hurt a lil ngl. I think their secondary romance would’ve helped the book feel a bit more complete in the romance department because the one between Iva and Quin was a bit one sided. I didn’t feel I really knew Quin and would’ve d a bit more focus spent on him, but I did their friendship and the tension at the end!

Overall, this was another great read from Joy Revolution!! I’ll definitely be reading more from this author. The narrator was pretty okay, but not my favorite in terms of guy voice. She had great emotion though.

Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

This is a perfect example for a textbook cliche high school romance. This is mushy, sweet, sappy, corny, and everything mixed in. All the characters were cute and even when it was frustrating it was enjoyable. There were a few parts I laughed and one I cried cause I’m a huge baby, so that’s a plus for me.

I think the target audience will think this is perfect. As someone almost 30 who didn’t care a thing about prom or romance over a decade ago, I thought a lot of this was silly and unnecessary. Do they actually do those huge promposals all over school now? That sounds Hell. I was a big fan of Elle’s first book and this one was simple and felt it got back to the YA romance roots.3 s1 comment AJ Eversole70 3

Small Business BookTok ARC Reviews: “10 Things I Hate About Prom” by Elle Gonzalez Rose

Note: This ARC was given to me for free by the author and I am reviewing this book voluntarily.

It's Prom Season, and tensions will be scorching!

Ivelisse can care less about the chaotic, clique- chaos that is Prom Season. She just wants to spend the rest of Senior Year with her best friend, Joaquin! When Joaquin wants to ask Tessa, the most popular girl at their school, to Prom, Ivelisse reluctantly agrees to help him come up with a Promposal! Will Ivelisse succeed in helping Joaquin, or will her best friend realize that what we wanted was in front of him the whole time!

This is truly an exciting YA Romance reminiscent of 1990's and 2000's Rom-Coms! From the comedic will-they-won't-they dynamic between Ivelisse and Joaquin to the Prom hijinx, Elle Gonzalez Rose does an excellent job of telling a Coming-Of-Age tale of the changes that come with relationships as we grow up. Through Rose’s writing, the commentary conveyed is that when changes appear to be on the horizon, one shouldn't let fear and doubt dictate or get in the way of the family, friends, and loved ones in their lives or the here and now. As an Afro-Caribbean/African American woman, it also means the world to me as a reader to see strong Puerto Rican representation portrayed in the form of the main character and love interest! If you’re looking for a captivating read that's reminiscent of “10 Things I Hate About You”, then don't miss out on this book when it hits online shelves on May 14, 2024!

10 Things I Hate About Prom is a sweet and funny young adult romance featuring two Latinx best friends, Ive and Joaquin, as Ive helps Quin think of the best proposal for a new crush, Tessa. Ive would do anything for her best friend even help him date another girl when she realizes her feelings for him are more than platonic. Quin's 'nice boy' nature will make you blush and sweep you off your feet, Ive's promposal hijinks will have you applauding her skills while laughing at the lengths she will go to to keep her best friend from falling for anyone else, and the romance will keep you glued to the book hoping for the aha moment.

I started reading this book and it brought me so much happiness to see Latinx representation. It's such a fulfilling feeling when you can see yourself in a character. It was apparent that there were hidden feelings between Quin and Ive, and I hoped that by the end the pair would find their way. I think their connection sparkled and lit up the entire book. They have been besties for a long time and are neighbors and to say they know each other well would be an understatement. Prom is approaching and they normally go to events/dances together and change is brewing when Quin asks for help with his promposal for a girl named Tessa. Ive finds it hard to want to help because Tessa and Ive don't have the best track record. But she puts her feelings aside because if the tables were turned she knows that Quin would drop everything to help her. Things get even more complicated when Ive realizes that she has feelings for Quin. Why did it take her so long to see it? Will this crush change their friendship forever?

It's a fast-paced read and I finished it in one night. It left me smiling at the sweet nature and romantic side of such a young man in Quin. Even though he is the star baseball player and Ive is part of the tech crew, they are the right fit. Yes, they are different but the way they already know how to care for each other and treat each other at such a young age is beautiful. I had so many favorite moments in the book when Quin was so thoughtful with Ive and it made me want to tell her 'Can't you see how much he s you'. By the end, I was squealing with excitement, and even left me wishing I could have had a cute and charming promposal the ones featured in the book. 2024-read contemporary contemporary-romance ...more Thya (wiltedpages)65 6

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT PROM features Ivelisse (aka Ive), a high school senior with very little of a social life outside of her best friend Joaquin in their New Jersey town. Between Ive's mom dating again (and a dad that she hasn't seen in years) and Joaquin's mom moving back to Puerto Rico, the two of them are entangled in each other's lives, with Joaquin's dog living at Ive's house and his grandmother taking caring of both of them. Which is perfect, because they're best friends. When Joaquin asks Ive to help him prompose to Tessa Hernandez, the popular girl that Ive caught making out with her (ex) boyfriend freshman year, she's a little hesitant because of how badly she was wronged by Tessa, but lucky for her, every promposal attempt Joaquin and Ive plan crash and burn even more spectacularly than the previous.

Obviously, the romance is the main focus of the book. It's fun to watch Ivelisse slowly realize that she has a crush on her best friend as they continue setting up promposal after promposal. It's also fun to hear Joaquin vaguely mention another girl without saying her name (and the other girl is clearly not Tessa). It's adorable and wholesome and very much a teen story.

There's other side stories going on in the book, college applications! Ive is waitlisted for her dream school and accepted to her "mom's" dream school, and she doesn't know how to tell her mom that they have different dreams. With her mom dating again, Ive feels neglected by her mother, and also her mom no longer cares about her. The building resentment results in a touching moment between the two of them at Ive's lowest point. Another fun subplot is Tessa! I won't spoil, but the book continually hints at who Tessa will probably end up going to prom with/also dating, but I didn't entirely connect the dots until right before the reveal.

Overall, great book, loved that nobody was turned into the villain, and the way the book ended was SO CUTE.ya-contemporary Bethany Hall555 13

I was lucky enough to win a copy of this ARC from a giveaway by Elle Gonzalez Rose and she even annotated it for me which truly was *chef’s kiss* amazing for my reading experience. Y’all, I devoured this novel. My never-had-a-date in high school self ATE THIS UP.

Ivelisse and Joaquin are best friends, and they have been for years. It’s senior year and promposal time. Joaquin asks for Ive’s help with promposing to a girl at school, only for Ive to sabotage… when she realizes she has feelings for Quin.

Oh my gosh this was just the cutest thing in the world but here are some things I loved:
Ive - I LOVED her. She was flawed and a little messy and sweet and cute. She also was a fierce friend and a protector at heart. A people pleaser me. I felt for her - from falling for her best friend, to fighting with her mom, to working herself ragged. She was so so relatable.
Joaquin. Gosh, the high school dream love interest. Jock hot, yet also nerdy as heck.
I loved the family members that surrounded these two.
Those promposals were a trip.
The Dino puns.
Anna! Such a smart girl and she was a lovely support to Ive. Tessana!!
The 10 things I hate about you references were so good.
The hints of attraction between Ive and Quin had me squealing.
The photobooth!!!!!!! *screeching*
The macaw scene! I died.
The love note! So adorable.
Those yearbook declarations - brb melting.
The promposal at the end.
Prom.
My little angels getting their HEA and dancing the night away while kissing. I cried, I'm sure it is a shock to everyone.

Gosh, I loved this so so so much. Comes out in May and I hope you read it! Fantastically cute and sweet and charming. Jenni583 19

A super fun rom-com with two best friends. Ivelisse and Joaquin have been friends and neighbors for as long as they can remember. They have attended each other's birthdays, and even built a tree house together in the backyard. They've even attended all of the high school dances together, to the delight of their mothers and abuelas. But when senior year rolls around and promposals are in full season, Joaquin decides that he's going to ask a beautiful cheerleader to the prom and he wants help from.his BFF. Ivelisse isn't happy about this change of plans and realizes that she feels some type of way about Joaquin, but isn't sure how to bring it up when he's crushing on another. A fun read! This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full review Brady503 3

Thank you Random House/Joy Revolution and Netgalley for this eARC, these opinions are my own. Ivelisse and her best friend Joaquin have attended a lot of school dances together and with them being in their Senior year Ive figured they’d attend their Prom together as well. With school winding down Ive is feeling the absence of their friendship, which wasn’t helped by her mom making her skip out on her Spring Broke plans. And now Joaquin’s back and he’s informed her that he wants to ask Tessa, one of the most popular girls in school, to the dance. Ive’s thrown through a loop especially as she has a past with Tessa, and not a happy one. He begs her for help. In order to spend time with him he agrees but as time passes she starts to notice him in a new light. Can she help him ask another girl to prom? Will she work up the courage to tell him how she feels? Another great one from Elle Gonzales Rose! I loved Ive and Joaquin! I also loved the other things going on in the story! Tessa’s story as well as the dynamic between Ive and her mom! Parts cute, sweet, and funny! You’ll get all the warm and fuzzies from this one!

Why do I love YA so much? I honestly don't know but man alive, I sure do.
This book is adorable. There is a fair amount of language in it, but the romance is just kissing. Do what you will with that information.

If you 90s romcoms, I Cant Take My Eyes Off of You, promposals, friends to more, sabotage, plays and baseball, read this one and fall in love with Ivelisse's story! Kimberly538 2

One of my favorite YA romcoms of the year! I will definitely be recommending this one to my library patrons!

I loved Ivelisse & Joaquin and their relationship. They have that connection that we all dream of achieving with our partner.

The promposal shenanigans were hysterical and the random cast of crazy secondary characters had me snickering. audiobooks lgbtq realistic ...more Jocelyn Gold11

This was an awesome book and it was realistic and relatable. I how the author had creativity and included humor to this book, which made it fun to read. It was so cool getting to know the characters and seeing it all play out. There was also romance, which made the story really cute. H Paige275 5

I just adore prom season, love hearing about different promposals and just the whole experience is fun to read about. This was a perfect prom season book. A real friend to lovers’ type of book that just gives you hope for the main characters to finally figure things out.

We meet Ivelisse and Joaquin who have been best friends for the longest time. It's prom season and the promposals have begun. They've always gone to dances together but this time around Joaquin has a plan to ask out the most popular girl.

Ivelisse begins to realize that she may have more than just friend feelings for Joaquin. This realization causes her to consciously and subconsciously sabotaged every promposal he attempts. It's fun tread about how this goes about and what diverse ways he chooses to create these different promposals. Their dynamic is so good together you just must wait for the realization to hit. It was a cute read. Flowed smoothly, written well, and entertaining from the beginning to the end.

I enjoyed all the characters and what part they played in this book. This wasn’t about the two of them though, there were secondary characters we learned about and got to experience their story as well. We also got to understand the dynamic between Ive and her mother which had a bit of turmoil as all relationships do, especially at that teenage stage. Compromises and truths come out between them and it’s a beautiful thing to experience, especially between a mother and daughter. I can sympathize.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for some entertainment with a prom twist.

This was a fun and modern take on how to tell your friend that you love them while poking fun at the insanity that has become proposals. It is also a sweet homage to "10 things I hate about you."

There was a lot in this book, not just the budding romance between friends. Elle Gonzalez Rose managed to bring in a lot of heart about what it is to be a high school senior, trying to balance wanting to move away for school and yet being tied to home. Ivelisse and Joaquin have been best friends and neighbors for years. Ivelisse is being raised by a single mom who has just started dating crazy and Joaquin is living with his grandmother after his sister has gone off to college and his mother moved back to Puerto Rico. Joaquin comes back from spring break and has decided he wants to invite Tessa Hernandez to prom via a big promposal. Tessa is the ultimate "it" girl and Ivelisse is still resentful over her involvement in a freshman year breakup. Ive starts to help, but at each effort, something goes wrong, accidentally at first, but then on purpose. Along the way, she realizes that she has feelings for him as well. All of this is happening while she is waiting desperately to get off of the waitlist at Sarah Lawrence rather than head to Rutgers with the rest of her class. It was a fun read that I could see a lot of teens enjoying.arc netgalley realistic-fiction ...more Maranda Barry305 2
