Sinopsis

Twice a century, the world of Duranaya grows new surfaces from the top of its mountain, casting old ones into darkness and forcing a constant upward migration of the nation. But there are those who live in the pitch-black Undersurface ... and they have come to claim the sunlit world, with unlikely power and allies.

In the midst of the invasion, Whissen, a monk afflicted with an assassinated mind, crosses paths with Reph, a huntress with a criminal past. They have little in common, but they do share a predator. One who has rediscovered their scents and knows their hidden, guilty weaknesses.

The invasion pauses for no one. Reph's aging father is trapped in a hopeless siege, and time is short. Together, Whissen and Reph must cross enemy territory ?before Reph's father is lost, chased by a killer who plays with her food. Can they turn their weaknesses into strengths before their pursuer does it for them?

An impressive and exciting start to what seems to be a breathtaking epic fantasy trilogy. The world-building is phenomenal - you will find yourself effortlessly learning more about the rich history, magic, beauty, and mythology of the universe with each page. World-building reminiscent of Tolkien meets the characterization and emotional development of J.K. Rowling to create an intricate and accessible roster of characters and places that you feel you've always known. There is certainly room for improvement with the plot's pacing and the mechanics of dialogue between characters; however, the consistently magnetic pull to the realm of Duranaya is undeniable. This book is absolutely worth giving a shot, and I can't wait for the rest of the trilogy. Chase Harris1 review

I enjoyed my time with this book. I thought the world was introduced well and is complete (personally I’d a little more of it left to the imagination) but it’s filled in and I know how it works very easily.

It has great characters who drive themselves forward and I can tell there will be some dynamics changing between people, and I’m looking forward to seeing how that develops.

Plus the arc is different than usual so that’s a bonus.

Also I did love the surreal elements with the characters. Keeping things a little loose with these characters actually makes them bigger in my mind and I had fun reading that specifically.

Looking forward to the future installments! Madeleine Perry1 review
