Below the quality I've come to expect

Honestly, I'm quite disappointed that the quality of this publication is in sharp contrast compared to the last number of releases.

This book has a number of grammatical/spelling issues.

But worst of all, there is literally continuity on top of continuity errors. For the last number of books, the Imperial mk 7 missile has been able to release 3 antimatter missiles. From what I can see, there is nothing mentioned to indicate an update to the missiles above. I this book, however , seems to have randomly risen to 10 antimatter missiles per mk 7 missile. What leads me to believe this is a continuity error and not anything else is that in this very same book at one point, it is said that the mk 7 released 5 antimatter warheads. So the continuity is broken within this book itself, let alone with the previous one.

Additionally, for the longest time, over the course of multiple books, the battlestations were equipped with very powerful mk 10 missiles, but now, in this book, it's randomly changed to mk 7.

As well, in the last book, James's flagship was the IS Victory, which is different from this one. That is fine as I expect admirals to fly their flag on different ships. However, his flagship is the "Royal Sovereign," which was described at the beginning of the book as the Imperial yacht. And then, later referred to as James's flagship and the biggest ship created by humanity so far. I don't know about you, but yacht would be the last descriptor I would have used to first introduce us to this ship.

***Major Spoilers from here on***

Take all of the above and combine it with what feels a rushed and fake death scare for James, and we're left with probably my least favorite book in the entire series. I would have rather him die in a meaningless way he should have in this book and have Johnathan have to take the role of Emperor than have what feels a rushed conclusion.

If it wasn't for other aspects of the plot and other particular developments between characters as well as the solid character development we see with Johnathan, then this would easily have been a 2 star for me. And it hurts me to say that. Especially since this has been, and still is, my favorite series to date.2 s Per Gunnar1,194 69

This series, Empire Rising, do not disappoint. Well, there has been one book in the series, Mutineer, that got a two star rating from me due to way too much political shenanigans, but apart from that it is a four to five star series.

This book weighs in at a good four stars.

The war(s) are about to start up again whether humanity (The Empire) wants it or not. Their former foe are about to mop up their little civil war and the despicable, slithering Silizzeras agent is doing its best to stir things up and throw gravel in the machinery.

I do so dis this take over humans, infiltration and deceit part of the story but at least the cat is out of the bag now and that slithering piece of shit had to go on the run. That does not stop it from continuing to disrupt things though.

As usual with this series there are a fair amount of action both in space and on the ground. Of course I much prefer the space action with ships slugging it out.

There are also a new twist, of the what the f… kind, in this book. Not the stupid lets-throw-in-some-unexpected-and-implausible-crap kind of twist but, although it was indeed unexpected, a rather interesting one.

Well, there is probably not much else I can say about this book that has not been said in previous so let’s just say that I am looking forward to the next one. I suspect (hope) that this one was setting the stage for some nice (big) fleet action in the next one.military science-fiction1 Mr Fabio Scalici5 1 follower

Once again an excellent book in the series, I look forward to the next one.1 Jim1,087 44

Well, things have started to go better for the Human Empire lead by Emperor James and Empress Christine Somerville. The return of the Emperor and more importantly his two children, Jonathan and Georgia, to the royal palace was no small event. Of course Christine was there to greet them and her joy was compounded by the knowledge that her daughter, Georgia definitely was alive although injured and recovering. Georgia, as you’ll recall was captured by Admiral Reverus of the Protectorate, but they treated her well and even listened to her countering the terrible lies they had been told about the Human Empire.

This lead directly to a peace accord between the Protectorate and the Human Empire and stopped a potentially terrible war that the Human Empire didn’t need. Both Georgia and Jonathan had done very well in their respective military jobs, but now it was time for them to stay home for awhile so their mother, Empress Christine could dote on them as only a mother can.

Unfortunately, while the war with the Protectorate was over, the instigator was still out there trying to cause trouble. It called itself Rarmanca. It had been seen escaping the destruction it had caused during the peace negotiations with the Human Empire and the Protectorate. This snake- alien was trying to stir up problems for the Human Empire since it felt that Empire was the greatest threat to her species. It had been thwarted with the peace between the to antagonist so it was off to stir up more trouble elsewhere. That led it to the lair of the Flex-aor and High Queen Ala’ron. The High Queen had been doing those things suggested by Rarmanca only because this alien had enabled her to escape from her former home world where she had been held prisoner. The Flex-aor despised the Human Empire and had been attacking it for quite awhile. Now the High Queen wanted to consolidate her forces and delay further attacks.

That wasn’t in the plans for Rarmanca, but she didn’t have much in the way of forcing the High Queen to go on the offensive so she left to see if she could stir up trouble on Earth itself. She had already co-opted several humans into doing her bidding, some were in very high government positions. I say ??she” now because it was using its human prosthetic that appeared to all as a human woman. She arrived on Earth undetected and began laying out her plans.

Meanwhile, back near where the Flex-aor were located, close to the souther borders of the Human Empire, Vice Admiral Emilie Alveraz, was hosting an Ambassador from the Camogodas Democratic Republic. It turns out this civilization was aware of the Flex-aor and had witnessed the Flex-aor attacking and destroying one of its neighboring civilizations. They were looking for allies against the Flex-aor and they had intelligence on where the High Queen and her fleets were located. This was just the information Emilie needed, but she didn’t know if she had enough ships to bring the fight to the Flex-aor. Still, that was a problem she was gladly going to fix if it might mean the end of the Flex-aor.

Jonathan, not wanting to sit at home in the palace and do nothing was sent to report to Admiral Ivanov at Fort Zeta. From there he was assigned the mission of hunting pirate activity in the Wildes, that border space between the Karacknid and Human Empires. Here he would stumble upon a number of significant and dangerous things. He would also have an encounter with the Rillelio, a small civilization that had been ravaged by the Karacknid. The Karacknid destroyed most all of the Rillelio’s space capabilities when they found out it had assisted Emperor Somerville in the last war. The Rillelio had apparently been aided by the snake- aliens and had built up their space fleets in an astonishing quick fashion. Could they be seeking revenge against the Human Empire for what Emperor James Somerville had done to them?

So, there is a lot going on in this book. The Karacknids are still fighting their civil war but it appears to almost be over. Admiral Somerville knows that the new Karacknid Imperator will make attacking Earth a priority once the civil war is settled. James only hopes they have been building enough ships to defend themselves and that nothing happens until the next Karacknid attack. He doesn’t know that his life is about to take a turn for the worse.

The story continues in book 18, “The Call of Honor”, now available on Amazon.1 1 comment Ken\Libby4 1 follower

Excellent as always

If you are still reading after the first 16, well you will absolutely LOVE this one. Holmes continues to keep it new and fresh while moving the main stories forward despite the ever growing Somervile family. This book is even longer than several others in the series so that is an extra bonus. I recommend Book 17 for those who have enjoyed the series and recommend the series to anyone who enjoys military -science fiction. This particular book is one of my favorites in the entire series. Excellent story with plenty of action. This whole series has been very good. The story is a good read as a stand-alone, but the reader can definitely benefit from reading the other books in the series.

The author has had a grand vision for the entire series. It started out with pretty much only humans fighting each other to become this galaxy-wide cloak-and-dagger with many large space battles. Wesley D Smith13

The author continues to deliver a great story

The very first book in this series left something to be desired but every volume after has delivered on the promise to be great. Lots of action and character development. I actually had sorrow over the deaths of several people. Worth the time.

Wow, this series continues to be just awesome!

Although the 17th book, one would think the series is getting stale....not even close. A truly fresh and detailed interweaving of plot from the very first books in the series. A truly outstanding read!! Please keep them coming! David Howie7
