This combination of enemies-to-lovers spicy romance, murder mystery, and fae royalty political intrigue was a fun, satisfying short read. It’s a novella, so there’s not much scope for character growth or detailed world building - I would have loved more information about the magical system and how the four change of season rites worked, rather than having to pick up what I could in the fly. I hope the author will write more, longer books set in this world, as I really enjoyed the glimpse this book gave. The spice level was mild: after a lead up of a number of isolated kisses, a single scene of consummation, writing with lovely poetic language and only moderate detail. Perhaps the intended audience is young adult or new adult? I’m not sure. I enjoyed it, but as a very mature adult, would have d it better if it were hotter.

The book begins when the FMC is portalled to the crime scene, sees the MMC, recognizes him as an enemy, and assumes he is the murderer, only to be accused of the deed herself. So she has to work with him to prove her innocence, combining their quite opposite magical powers. The mixing of magics leads to a growing attachment, in spite of her distrust. The unraveling of the mystery was suspenseful, and the developing appreciation between them sweet. And of course there was an HEA.

This is only this author’s second book, and I d it far better than her first one. That one started well, but didn’t carry through. This one carried through all the way. Definitely a recommend.
