Fletcher Westbrook a club owner has been receiving threats. Siobhan Kenney is trying to raise her siblings after their parents disappeared, so she dons trousers & becomes Sean a lad of all work. A lovely novella the chemistry between Fletcher & Siobhan sizzles plus there’s danger & mystery – I loved it5 s Terrie Norris120

Fletcher Westbrook finally has his story and Siobhan is an incredible match for him! Kiss A Rake at Midnight was originally contained in the Rakes & Reticules anthology but is also part of Collette Cameron’s Chronicles of the Westbrook Brides series. If you are looking for an enjoyable, quick read with romance, mystery, a spunky heroine, and a handsome gaming-den owner hero, this is the book you want.

Things had been quiet at the De la Chance Social Club, one of Fletcher’s entertainment establishments, for a few months until last night. Then another threatening note appeared. This after the fires, sabotage, and vandalization of Fletcher’s other places had him cautious. He thought they had apprehended and jailed the culprit. If so, who was responsible for this latest letter? And how had the person gotten all the way to the private quarters in the club? Was there an inside accomplice?

Siobhan Kenney’s parents vanished, and she became the sole provider for her young siblings. Masquerading as a young lad, Sean, and working at De la Chance provides just enough money to cover their rent and a few necessities. Duplicitous, yes, but at least this way her siblings had a roof over their heads and wouldn’t starve. When Siobhan falls ill and faints at De la Chance, Fletcher finds out “Sean” is a girl. How could he not have seen the delicate bone structure and graceful movements? Is she the inside partner? What will happen to Siobhan when she recovers from her illness?

Things I loved about the story: Fletcher having smoke coming out his ears over Siobhan’s actions, but his kind heart coming to the rescue for her siblings, Siobhan’s ability to put him in his place and point out the stark contrast between her dire condition and his lavish existence, Siobhan’s fierce loyalty and protectiveness over her siblings, Paddy and Kimber, and the witty banter and the way Siobhan is able to make Fletcher laugh.

How do two people who don’t trust each other, work together to trap a crook? Especially once sparks start kindling between them. Or will they cause Fletcher’s plan to go up in flames? This well-written novella was such a joy to read – I read it in one sitting! I enjoyed Fletcher, Siobhan, and all the secondary characters so much I wished the story had been longer. Thank you to Ms. Cameron for an Advanced Reader Copy. I voluntarily read the book and all thoughts and opinions are my own. Elizabeth Connor1,296 26

Thanks to the author for an ARC of this novella. It’s the seventh installment of the “Chronicles of the Westbrook Brides” series, of which I’ve also read book six. Leonidas and Primrose, from book six, are mentioned several times in this story, but it’s far from necessary to read any other books in the series to know what’s happening in this one. I expect every one of them is designed to be read individually.

Siobhan, disguised as a young man, is working for Fletcher in his gambling club. When her deception is uncovered because she faints from a fever, he is furious that she tricked him, but he won’t kick her out because she is ill. Someone is out to hurt Fletcher and he wonders if she has something to do with it. While reading this part of the book, I stumbled across these words and had to read them several times, just to enjoy the cadence and beat of the words: “His distrust distressed Siohban…” Masterful use of language!

The more Fletcher gets to know Siohban, the more he realizes she would never do something that. She has too much integrity. Despite her deception, she is inherently honest, and he can feel himself falling for her. So, he engages her help to entrap those who wish to hurt him—Lord and Lady Huxley. When Fletcher presents Lady Huxley with an opportunity to be alone with him, in the hopes of convincing her to turn on her husband, Siohban watches as “Her ladyship took the bait a fat, brown trout gobbling a wriggling worm.” Eww. What a clever way to describe the actions of an outwardly attractive person who is base and conniving at heart.

In fact, there were many cleverly-worded statements in this story that had me shaking my head and laughing. One that stood out to me was when two older women offered to save a seat for Siohban when they clearly wished to use the seat. Looking at the woman who made the suggestion, Siohban thought of the woman who spoke, “She was as subtle as a highland cow mincing down Bond Street, wearing the crown jewels.”

As for the story itself, although intended to feel dangerous and tense, I never felt much apprehension for the characters. I enjoyed the story, but because it was so short, I didn’t connect with them as I would have were I given more information and time to get to know them. Overall, it was good, but it wasn’t completely emotionally engaging. It’s a fun read. Tina Ullrich711 2

Siobhan Moya Neasa Kenney, Paddy and Kimber her siblings, with their parents missing she finds works as an extra at De la Chance a social club which is the only work she could find. The drawback is they think she is a boy.. When Kimber gets sick and Siobhan catches it she faints at work which causes her ruse to be discovered. when her part in how the threatening note gets delivered.

Fletcher Westbrook’s De la Chance and his other establishments, Ivories & Aces and The Emporium Theater, are under threat again. He wants is done and over but the culprit that they caught is not talking. With his brother and cousin to help they hatch a plan.

As payback for her part, Fletcher convinces Siobhan she has to play a part. Reluctantly she agrees, however, refuses to let the children to participate. He is mad at himself for not seeing thru the ruse and for her not coming clean about the ruse. Siobhan realizes she didn't say anything due to trust issues also.

As the plan to capture whomever is posing these threats starts, other information comes to light that is kept hidden. As Fletcher watch's Siobhan with her siblings, his staff, and how she handles playing her part in the ruse, he worries if he can let her go after it is over.

The suspense of who is behind the tgreats, why, and how it was done will surprise you. This weaving gives you the thrill of the chase as it unfolds. The romance is subtle but simmering. Great short, fast read to ditto are you. Lana Birky1,446 17

In the heart of London, where opulence often conceals hidden secrets, a captivating novella emerges, weaving suspense with romance. The story centers on Fletcher Westbrook, a charismatic and wealthy gaming den proprietor, whose world is turned upside down when he learns that Siobhan Kenney, a young lad in his employ, is actually a woman in disguise. Siobhan, an Irish immigrant, has been posing as a boy to safeguard her younger siblings following the vanishing of their parents. Her intense resolve and the lengths she will go to protect her family are as stirring as they are poignant. Upon discovering her true identity, Fletcher's initial outrage gives way to respect and intense fascination.

The novella delves into class conflicts and concealed dangers, focusing on the relationship between Siobhan and Fletcher, whose romance is jeopardized by the threats around them. Well-crafted scenes provide clarity and emotional depth, which breathes life into the characters and draws the reader deeper into the pages. It's more than a romance; it's a quest to discover trust and the courage needed to face one's fears, demonstrating love's ability to triumph over hardship. Cameron skillfully garners support for Fletcher and Siobhan's quest for a joyous conclusion, crafting a novella that is indeed a deeply satisfying read. Rose Seals786 8

Absolutely well written, full of love, action, romance, danger, mystery, emotions, intrigue, suspense, society and a beautiful cover. Siobhan is working at a gaming hell, DeLaChance, to earn a way to help pay for her rent and food. The only problem is she is doing it as a boy. She has a brother and a sister to help and provide for them. Fletcher is the owner of the gaming hall, having an issue that he had hoped was solved until he receives a letter that states, it's not over . Siobhan tells him that she was the person who left the letter but was told that it was a love assignation. She tells him who gave her the letter then faints. Well, Fletcher and his men make plans to trap the people who are causing him this trouble. Has lots of fabulous characters. A really great addition to this series. This author has again written another spell binding story to keep your attention. Excellent read. Would strongly recommend to everyone. Nancy H21 2

Having met Fletcher in earlier books, I was eagerly looking forward to reading his story. It did not disappoint! Our hero is strong and charismatic, and used to living life on his terms. However, he’s been targeted by an unknown enemy, and this brings a new level of intensity to his life. Enter Siobhan, a beautifully passionate woman who further complicates Fletcher’s world when her identity is discovered. As they both learn what it means to love and trust another, outside forces conspire against the safety and wellbeing of those who work and live at De la Chance. A fast-paced and sweet story, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Kiss a Rake at Midnight. While this story does have characters from earlier books make brief appearances, it can be read as a standalone. I was extremely fortunate to receive an ARC of Kiss A Rake at Midnight by Collette Cameron. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Fletcher Westbrook, owner of a gaming club, is being threatened. Siobhan Kenney or Sean (in disguise) has been working at the gaming hell dressed as a boy to support her younger step siblings. She is also the messenger of a missive that she assumes to be an assignation letter, but is in reality a threat. When she confesses her innocent part in delivering the letter, her secret is also out and she now must help Fletcher find the real culprits. The magnetic pull between the two main characters is subtle, yet electrifying. This is a delectable story, sweet and captivating.

This book is about Fletcher and Siobhan. Siobahan is an Irish woman who is taking care of her younger brother and sister. She could not find a job as a woman, so she dresses up as a boy and gets a job in a gambling hall which is owned by Fletcher. When Siobahan faints, Fletcher finds out she is a woman and he is immediately attracted to her. This book is well written. I wish there was more interaction between Siobahan and her siblings.

Circumstances brought out her secret, and I enjoyed Fletcher's reaction, emotions, and eventual capitulation to love. Siobhan was wary and hesitant to trust her feelings. Siobhan will do everything to keep her brother and sister with a roof over their head. Even deceive her employer, Fletcher into thinking she is a teenage boy.
