Death on Cozumel Island by Cindy Quayle is a cozy mystery set in Mexico. The unique background of Claire O'Keefe, the main character, helps this light mystery stand out. Claire has lived all over the world teaching English, and she is also an experienced diver. Diving plays a big role in the book and some of the detailed references went over my head, but I did learn things about scuba diving that I didn't know before.

After completing her latest teaching assignment, Claire travels to Cozumel, Mexico to attend a pre-wedding celebration for her best friend, Julia. Claire would rather spend time with just Julia or with new friends (and a potential love interest) that she met while diving, but she tries to be sociable and attend as many bridesmaid-related festivities that she can. I can't blame her since one of the bridesmaids is awful to be around, but it does seem strange that she was focused more on diving than the bride-to-be. Because of this, the reader gets to know Claire's new friends much better than the women in the wedding party.

Claire's schedule really fills up when one of the divers is murdered and she feels the wrong person has been arrested for the crime. I admire her doing what she can to investigate in a strange country and limited knowledge about the victim and the suspects. This is a fun debut novel and has the potential to be an excellent series. I look forward to seeing what will happen next for Claire.clean-cozy kindleunlimited8 s ColleenSC (ioldbooks1213)280 28

Escape to Cozumel!

Thank you to the author for sending me a free e-book. The following opinions are my own.

Part mystery, part travel diary, this first book in the Claire O’Keefe series was a unique and fun read! The author’s depiction of the Cozumel setting is a real strong point. I could picture everything so clearly. Also fascinating were all the scuba diving details. The author clearly has knowledge about diving as well as travel, and these elements are a key part of the storyline.

Claire is a likable main character, and I loved how she made friends throughout her trip. I would definitely enjoy more books with her.

In some places, the sentence structure could be clearer and less wordy, but that is a minor quibble. Overall, I had a lot of fun reading this book and traveling to Cozumel with Claire! 3 s J.R.Author 7 books39

I've been on a cozy mystery kick lately, and this book is easily my favorite one so far this year. I love escaping to warm bookish locations when I'm stuck in the colder months of Kansas. Having never scuba dived before, I really enjoyed learning so much about it from the MC. Claire was relatable and such an easy character to love. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!3 s Kait CarsonAuthor 6 books71

A wonderful mystery with characters you will want to visit often.

Full disclosure. I'm a hard sell for a scuba diving mystery. I've been a diver for most of my life. Quale hits the sport on the head, but doesn't hit you over the head with the sport. This mystery is delightful. Fast paced and well plotted. It kept me guessing until the end. I'm looking forward to reading the next in this series. cozy mystery women-sleuths2 s Ferne1,334 40

Claire O’Keefe teaches English as a foreign language in international settings. Her best friend Julia Kim decided she’d love a destination bachelorette party, and to Maid of Honor, Claire’s delight has picked Cozumel. This destination will allow Claire to enjoy scuba diving between celebrating with the bride and bridal party. What could possibly distract Claire on a bachelorette weekend at a beautiful resort?

A refreshing author debut that begins a new cozy series. It is the first cozy that I’ve read in the setting of Cozumel, and the interesting feature of scuba diving. I loved the setting, scuba diving, and imaginative delights that roam away from existing cozy tropes that I must keep secret as I don’t share spoilers. I was distracted by copy editing errors and am hopeful they decrease as the background and interests of the main character offer a wealth of possibilities. I can’t wait to read more of Claire O’Keefe’s adventures. I’m ready to pre-order as soon as Book 2 is available.1 Lee VargasAuthor 3 books

You know that curious friend we all have who neglects us in favor of a whodunit? Yes, yes. It's Claire O'Keefe. Lol.
In this debut novel and the start of a cozy series, Claire O'Keefe, an international traveler, English teacher, scuba diver, and now amateur sleuth, sets out to help a new friend by solving a mystery.
What starts out as a bachelorette trip to sunny Cozumel takes a nasty turn when someone ends up dead. This cozy follows Claire as she unravels what happened and makes some sweet connections along the way.
Diving is big in the book but not in a heavy-handed way, so a reader unfamiliar with it can follow along and even maybe consider a future dive??? Idk
