Not my typical read, but this was cute. Gentle. And sweet.
Midge is her family protector. Her father left her and eight siblings to outrun his debt collectors. They are slowly starving. So Midge starts poaching chickens from neighboring farms.
She gets caught by Baxter. He’s certainly incensed but then sees how the family is living and how much Midge sacrifices to keep them together.
Over time, but not much time, he is smitten.
There’s a brouhaha about the farm and Baxter’s intentions. But it’s solved quickly.
He sure seems to have a lot of money and he spends freely on the children.

I enjoyed the book! Midge was stealing to chickens to feed her younger siblings. Baxter caught her and followed her home. He discovered her father had deserted the family and they had nothing to eat. He decided to help them. This is a clean wholesome story. This book is part of a series. It can be read standalone but there are characters from previous books in the series. Too many misunderstandings!

Midge and all of her siblings are deserted by her father hiding from debtors. Midge resorts to stealing food to feed her siblings while quite often going without. Baxter catches her and sees the conditions they are struggling to survive in and while helping falls for Midge. However, loves path is not smooth. Natasha194

sweet and wholesome

Loved reading about another Hartman sibling and getting back to Flat River world! It’s a quick but enjoyable read, with simple plot and relatable characters. The story (of how love makes everything better and all difficulties are easier to handle when there is a trustworthy and reliable person with you) is so good that you finish with a smile. Ollie647 3

What a lovely story. The trials that Midge went through to keep her family together. Her father abandoned her and her 8 younger siblings. She resorted to stealing chickens to feed her flock. The grumpy neighbor (owner of the chickens) catches her red handed. When he sees their plight he helps and that’s the beginning… Sandra Sorola666 7

Baxter and Miriam (Midge) are a perfect pair. They just have to come to terms with being the perfect pair. One of my favorite Authors and a wonderful series! Flat River is where I want to live! I love this book and highly recommend it! Jana Mogren4

If you’re looking for a VERY PG rated, exceptionally minimalistic descriptive romance “feel good” read in 2 hours or less kind of book this is it. This book has a lot of potential but isn’t quite there yet. Rita524 3
