Sinopsis

Intricately plotted, this novel explores different kinds of fictions, infidelity and dangerous freedoms.Anna Devine, a young New Zealand painter living in London, has two chance encounters that set her on a search for answers. Can she really 'see' her new city properly? Can she reconcile family life and art? Her search leads her into past mysteries of her troubled family and her brother's death, and towards future complexities: infidelity, dangerous freedoms, and a whole new eye on her foreign city. In Auckland, in another time, Justine Devantier is reading a novel in order to find out about its author - and possibly about herself. And in a fictional city a man looks for a woman he knew long ago. At the core of this intricate plot is British novelist Richard Black, who may hold the strands that bind all the protagonists together. Grimshaw's brilliantly drawn characters walk through her foreign cities in different guises. She gives us a 'true' story, a fiction, a love...

I struggled along with this and after the end of the first part, I threw the towel in. I just couldn't face a whole new storyline after stuffing down my disapproval of the central character for half a book. Having said that, I do Grimshaw's style for the most part.1 Kathleen Dixon3,992 64

I loved this book - brilliantly descriptive of colours and weather and art and writing - and I love the story, but I don't understand why she didn't want us to know the connection for a while between One and Two. She gave the characters different names, so it was confusing. There didn't seem to be good purpose to it, and felt contrived. Sally287

Too much introverted brooding for me

Enjoyed the recognisable cultural characters in NZ drawn by Charlotte Grimshaw in her first book but couldn't identify with this brooding introverted artist in London, risking her great mArriage. sleeping with the neighbour.
Stopped reading after a third :) Loraine Hawkins3 4

NZ author. Set in London and Auckland. Two novels in one with some connections. Only a small amount of irritating post-modernist showing off, and it barely detracts from the stories. Camille305

I quite enjoyed this book and am not entirely sure what left me wanting - was it the writing or the unable main character. Dianne Wetherell3

I don't think I can finish it. Not enjoyable to me. Alice3
