Sinopsis

A less light-hearted play than usual from Centlivre. There is the familiar set-up with two pairs of star-crossed lovers, and comedy is provided by mistaken identities, hiding in closets and a character trussed up in a pedlar's pack. But a darker element is introduced with a faithless maid, an uncle who tries his hand at pimping, and a rival lover prepared to contemplate rape -- not once, but twice. This time, a French servant accounts for the jokes at the expense of foreigners.
