Wow! 4.5?Deviant was such an unexpected yet pleasant experience. This gem captured my attention from the beginning. It tackles child welfare, neglect, and substance abuse, amongst other things. High school seniors, Caseus and Toya, formed an unexpected friendship. They had different backgrounds but were resilient and had to overcome obstacles. In the opening scene, seven-year-old Caseus is introduced during a CPS removal. During his senior year, Caseus lives in an orphanage; he doesnt fit in with his classmates and does not care about senior activities. Toya becomes his partner for a project. Their bond quickly formed, and Toya helped him to open up. It was cute and refreshing to see Caseus have a normal friendship and extended family. At times it seemed that Toya was obsessed with him, but I think she was intrigued and smitten by his story. I think the author tackled the story well, even the heavy topics. It was clear that the characters had feelings and were protective of each other. However, I was sad at how their friendship ended. The ending alludes to their story just being started; I may be wrong, but I think Toya is pregnant, lol! I truly enjoyed this story; I read it in one sitting and cannot wait for the second book.5 s Heather 280 12
