BEST FOR YE—BUT NOT FOR ME

Each story in The Reluctant Wagon Train Bride series will have a young, marriageable age female forced to marry to be able to journey to Oregon. The marriage is one of convenience and offers an annulment at the end. But, what happens along the trail may change the outcome. Each story will read as a stand-alone.

Lona Hollis is traveling with her cousins, Kenneth and Ardys Sedgewick, from Connecticut to Missouri, where they will join a wagon train heading to Oregon to join the Sedgewick family. Lona has been raised by her Sedgewick relatives after the death of both her parents. She has studied and is a schoolteacher.

Malachy ‘Mal’ MacMurphy wants more for his life than what his family offers. He isn’t pleased with the gangs and shakedowns in the Five Points neighborhood in New York City. He will move, start working the docks, work as a laborer, move onto the railroad, and make his way to Missouri where he plans to join a wagon train to Oregon.

The story’s plot will have Kenneth signup with a wagon train heading to Oregon. Days before departure, their wagon master takes ill and sells the contracts to Captain Baxter Chadwick, recently retired from the US Army. Chadwick looks over the passenger list and decides that he doesn’t want single women or men, and devises a plan for the singles to meet, chat, and then pick a partner for marriage—they can annul it when they arrive in Oregon. The men are in charge of the wagons, their oxen, and protecting his new wife, and she is to obey his directives, cook, and do their laundry and mending.

The story does have that different twists that make it unique. I can’t imagine a dance, a few questions, and having to choose a partner. It wasn’t hard for Lona to pick Mal, and they do make a great team. I enjoyed their story, how he looked out for her before they ever left Missouri, needing to make sure she could swim enough and how to shoot a gun—both will be something she has to do.

The story has the good, the bad, and the evil in people that come into play. I loved seeing how the three couples (the cousins and their spouses) worked together each day, making the best of the situation. While we do see bits and pieces of both Kenneth and Ardys, the story mainly focuses on Mal and Lona. I found the story a page-turner and didn’t want to put it down—I do hope that Ms. Carroll-Bradd will also have stories for Kenneth and Ardys with the person who became their spouse in Missouri. Another great character in this tale is Patrice, who is the acting medical person in the group, not only for people but even the animals. I found that part especially fascinating.

I enjoyed the book! Lona was traveling to Oregon with her two cousins. She planned to be a teacher. The wagon master required all women 18 or older to be married. Mal was traveling west to escape the crime in New York. They entered into a marriage of convenience. They endured many trials and danger along the trail before arriving in Oregon. This book is part of a series but is a standalone story. The book is a clean wholesome book. I recommend reading this book! Lea & Sandra2,511 2

Mal and Lona

Forced to marry! The three cousins were taken aback by the wagon masters decision that single women and men over 18 must be paired up. So many months and so many obstacles foster and solidify the developing feelings between Mal and Lona.
Delightful story! Sandra Bagwell531 3

What an adventure

The thought of going on such a hard trip makes me question if I could have survived. The attraction from the beginning is presented in a way that leaves a smile. The book is good from beginning to end. Earlene Click2,296 11
