Sinopsis

The finish of school life should have gifted Lucy Claybourne an uncomplicated summer, that is, until she makes the decision to revisit Hobswyke Hall ? a sprawling, derelict manor house that was once her childhood home.

Half a decade has passed since Lucy and her mother abandoned the gothic monstrosity that lords over the estate that surrounds it like a spider in its web and moved into the gatehouse on the far side of the grounds, a move supposedly made as a money saving exercise. But upon reacquaintance, Lucy realises there had to be more to the move than money, and it becomes her intention to find out what?

Then the groundkeeper's son, Sam Fletcher, makes a terrifying discovery, a discovery that will alter the path of Lucy's life in ways that will make her question everything she's ever known, and anything she's ever been told by those she holds dearest to her heart.

There is something very wrong with Hobswyke Hall, but some things are better off left...

Luuuuucy, Luuuuucy, calls Hobswycke Hall, Lucy’s childhood home. Why is she being called ? Why did they leave the Hall so hurriedly to live in The Gatehouse? And where is Lucy’s father?. Having finished her exams Lucy feels strangely compelled to find the answers to these questions. Together with Sam her childhood friend, they embark on adventure which contrasts sharply to the sunshine and happiness of their current life.

A combination between the parallel world of Narnia and the evil of Harry Potter, this is a deep and dark tale of otherworldliness. Will good overcome evil, or will evil keep on returning, can we trust what we see with our own eyes, does sadness and grief beget evil and cruelty?

A book that needs to be read on a cold, winters night, snuggled up in front of the fire, with the wind whipping the branches.I enjoyed this read, a gripping story, may be a few too many adjectives on occasions, but a very clever plot with an interesting twist towards the end and an even more interesting and scarier twist to finish. Would I recommend it, yes I would Jane Blake336 2

This is a book for 12-14 years, but I’m a lot older and really enjoyed it.
There is quite a lot of swearing, though does fit with the story.
Lucy’s family used to live in the big mansion house called Hobswyk, the way the writer describes it you really get the knowledge of how it looks and feels, one day her mother moved them out quickly and now live in the gatehouse.
Lucy started wondering about the house though and what it would be living in it so she finds the key her mother had hidden and went to look around, eventually after a few visits accompanied by her friend Sam, they come across a way to visit another world, it isn’t safe there though with monsters after them but they are both drawn to know what has happened.
I don’t think I will ever go looking around big houses again after reading this. Red Book Review 350 23
