Sinopsis

When ancient magic tests a newfound love, a dark fate beckons . . .

Magic has been banished in the land of Syhl Shallow for as long as best friends Jax and Callyn can remember. They once loved the stories of the powerful magesmiths and mythical scravers who could conjure fire or control ice, but now theyÂ’ve learned that magic only leads to danger: magic is what killed CallynÂ’s parents, leaving her alone to raise her younger sister. Magic never helped Jax, whose leg was crushed in an accident that his father has been punishing him for ever since. Magic wonÂ’t save either of them when the tax collector comes calling, threatening to take their homes if they can't pay what they owe.

Meanwhile, Jax and Callyn are astonished to learn magic has returned to Syhl Shallow -- in the form of a magesmith who's now married to their queen. Now, the people of Syhl Shallow are expected to allow dangerous magic in their midst, and no one is happy about it.

When a stranger rides into town offering Jax and Callyn silver in exchange for holding secret messages for an anti-magic faction, the choice is obvious -- even if it means they may be aiding in a plot to destroy their new king. ItÂ’s a risk theyÂ’re both willing to take. That is, until another visitor arrives: handsome Lord Tycho, the KingÂ’s Courier, the man whoÂ’s been tasked with discovering whoÂ’s conspiring against the throne.

Suddenly, Jax and Callyn find themselves embroiled in a world of shifting alliances, dangerous flirtations, and ancient magic . . . where even the deepest loyalties will be tested.

im still so bitter about how the cursebreakers series was ruined, but i guess not bitter enough to not read this spin-off series. lol.

and i will say this, BK knows how to start a series. the first books always come in strong and this is no exception. the characters are relatable, the magic is interesting, the court politics arent dull, and (even though this is on the longer side) the pacing is good.

what i really about this book in particular is the balance between all of the different POVs. i always felt each character got the right amount of page time. there are times when some POVs are present more, but it fits with the story. i never felt i was missing out on anyone.

so, a really great start. i honestly couldnt ask for anything more. but i said, the first books are always the best in each series by BK, so heres me with my fingers crossed that this series doesnt meet the same tragic end as the original series.

Well, it was exciting to return back to the Cursebreakers Universe, welcoming back Tychno ( we already met with him at “A heart so fierce and broken’). This book also introduces us two 18 years old new characters: Jax, the blacksmith- more likable character than Callyn the baker who are doomed to live in Syhl Shallow, the land where the magic has been banished.

Even though these two friends are adamant to learn the magic that is appeared in the form of magesmith, they find themselves into an espionage scheme that threatens the new kingÂ’s life! At that moment, Lord Tycho- the Courier of the king arrives to the land to investigate the culprits conspiring against the kingdom.

It took a little time for me to get into the story and resonate with the new characters. But as a fan of Cursebreakers series, I enjoy this thrilling ride and looking forward to read the upcoming sequels as well. I advise you to read the series at first to understand the dynamics between characters and true nature of magic!

I had high hopes for this book, after being a long-time fan of the Cursebreaker series, and it somehow was better than I thought it could be.

I couldn't put it down. I read all 500+ pages in 2 sittings. I never wanted it to end. I love all of the characters, old and new, I loved the direction the plot went in, and the romance?!?! I'm obsessed.

We follow three POVs: Tycho, the King's Courier (who you might be familiar with if you've read ACSDAL), Jax, a blacksmith, and Callyn, a baker. Jax and Callyn are best friends, living in a small village, who possibly get caught up in some minor treason. Meanwhile, Tycho is struggling to maintain the trust of the court and the king. I don't want to say too much about the plot, because I think it's best going in not knowing much, but I can tell you, it is absolutely addictive. I couldn't predict what would happen next and found myself glued to my book.

If you're looking for a fun fantasy read (with queer and disability rep!!) go pick this book up!
