THE LEGENDS DON'T DIE ...

No one alive knows more about legendary Ireland and its people than American archaeologist Keenan MacBreed. Yet what he is about to undergo lies far beyond the knowledge of any mortal soul. MacBreed is vacationing in his ancestral home to explore his Celtic roots—only to discover a timeless evil uprooted from deep within the earth.

... AND THE DEAD DON'T DIE

Outside the small town of Carrick-on-Suir, in burial grounds older than a millennium, beneath elaborately ornamented stone crosses that speak of lost but awesome rituals ... they have arisen. Victims of an age-old savagery as terrifying as their powers of magic, they're women who seek to cloak their dry, bleached bones with the flesh of the living, then free hundreds of others of their clan from the black, dirt-choked sleep of centuries. Desperate to stop them, and guided only by a hobbled old woman whose eccentricities mask a source of mystical strength all...

Cover of the 1992 Pocket Books mass-market, with art by Jim Warren (246 pages).

I never would have thought that a novel about ancient undead druids sucking the bones out of people in a small Irish village could be so...dull. Tedious might be a better descriptor, as there are way too many lengthy infodumps on Celtic culture and lore. It's pretty interesting, I suppose, but mostly just brings whatever bit of tension that's been built up to a grinding halt.

Also, the characters never felt actual people, and I never cared what happened to any of them. They all do things solely to make the plot move along, based almost entirely on their job description: cop does cop things, archeologist does archeology things, and so on. I never got a real sense of their motivations, or who they were outside of their jobs (their hopes, fears, etc.) besides some cursory background info.

It's competently written, with a few mild scares, but there's really nothing here to separate it from the glut of similar horror fiction of the era. My tastes in the genre run from the unabashedly trashy to the awe-inspiring weird, and this was point blank in the middle, neither outrageous enough nor strange and unnerving enough to be truly memorable.horror33 s Wayne797 11

An American professor with Irish roots is on hand to study some artifacts unearthed in a cemetery being moved across town. Problem is, the diggers uncover an old cross covering some skeletons. These remains are druids with exceptional powers. They squeeze out the victims bones and take over there body. Mayhem is in store for the small village an only the professor, his police sergeant friend and a female druid hundreds of years old can save it.

This book starts of nicely. I starts to build up some tension with the take over of people by the druids. Then half way through, we get an over long history lesson about old Irish, Celtic society. It's thrown in the story in lots of parts, but then an overload of past events of Irish lore. It dragged the mood down in a bog. It does pick up a bit for the ending. Although that was nothing spectacular. This could of been so much more.3 s Linda75 1 follower

Excellent dark fantasy about ancient druids in Ireland meeting up with a current day archeologist. I'm surprised this book is out-of-print. Very creative plot.fantasy1 Gooddeeds49
