“Criminal Archaeologist” would be a great title on a business card, but it’s a hard way to make a living -- as Ozzy Mack discovers when it turns out that he not only has to dodge the cops, but also save humanity’s remnants from a deadly plague. Premise is solid, the plot has lots of promise, but the characters varied from whiny and implausible (Ozzy) to bellicose and cartoonish (the “High Judge”.) The descriptive writing and dialog both lacked flow, making it hard to enjoy reading. I gutted it out through the first volume since it had glimmers of promise.  The second book’s story arc -- huh...find the all-powerful “Ark of the Concordant”...where have we heard that before? -- did me in, though.

I started off liking this, but wound up wondering if this wasn’t another case of a promising independent SF author prioritizing volume over polishing what could/should have been exciting work. quit William S.207 1 follower

How bad is it? Let me count the ways

Our hero gets into the most outlandish situations, and gets out of them in the most outlandish ways. Names are frequently misspelled (meaning they are spelled one way, and then another). Things needed to get out of a situation almost magically appear ( a secret passage in a three times destroyed spaceship). Fortune keeps reversing itself, and nobody can be trusted. Gadgets left someplace suddenly reappear for no good reason. It wasn't even needed. Others seem to just get lost as if irrelevant to the story ( two boxes of crystal skulls). The childish motives are repeatedly explained in the most unbelievable way. There is regularly unbelievable escapes at the last minute for our hero although not necessarily everyone else. My problem now is that the story doesn't end. I've invested effort in reading this drivel, and I'd to stop, but I'd also to know what constitutes an ending. Do humans achieve their destiny or are they going to keep on struggling against the invaders. Evon Johnson1 review

Interesting read.

I gave this a five star because I enjoyed the storyline.

However, the excessive use of onomatopoeia, especially when it comes to describing weapons fire is a bit cliche and distracts from what the main character is experiencing at the time.

I find it also odd that the main character was described as a college professor, while in the book he's quite immature and close-minded at times which is an antithesis to an educated college professor.

In my opinion, I think the author traded too much of the main characters intellectual curiosity and rationality for emotional turmoil and a criminal mindset.

The author could have made his curiosity the center of everything that The main character does instead of just taking jobs for money.

That could have helped driven home the fact that he is indeed a college professor.

Good story though.

P.S.

Looking forward to seeing how the author develops the Lilly character and the Galactic Knights. Christinaraven3,582 10

What a story. It has Mars as its backdrop, aliens, danger, action, a hunt through the past for the main hero, and the survival of the human race as the prize. Full of good and bad characters that that made me laugh and groan. And Ozzy could not get a break no matter what. Kept me reading to see what Ozzy would face in each book and how he would solve the riddle and if he could save humanity. Just a fun story that entertained me. Had a few twists and surprises. Not John Carter of Mars!!!!

After reading all of Edgar Rice Burroughs' books and being captivated by the John Carter and Princess of Mars books I was thoroughly disappeared with Mars Colony Chronicles..... I tried really hard to not compare Brandon Ellis to Burroughs but found that difficult to do.....and difficult to get through this series. I made it about halfway through the first book and just couldn't continue. Steven Shaw64

Izzy Never Quits…

and it seems as if he never learns, either. While Ozzy is trying to find the Gaia Stones: humans are being evicted from Mars, searching for another world, far from the Dunrakee, but is that even possible? Lyra believes humans have a special purpose in the galaxy. Ozzy just isn’t sure! Lee Inks56

Worth the read

The story was a bit hard to follow. The underling destiny is revealed more in each book. Not bad and I will look for more to follow on this story. The main character is a bit too negative for me but he grows on you. Errors in grammar, missing words, mixed up words - only in the last book though. Richard SuttonAuthor 9 books116

Engaging! Lots of action!

This space opera and quest held my attention pretty well throughout. I enjoy the genre, so my only complaint comes from the fact that the version I read really needed a good copy edit. Finding plural indicated with apostrophes, and other gaffes slowed the read down every time. If you don't have issues with grammar, then grab it and enjoy it! Larry9 2

Good read

I enjoyed the storyline, and keeping up with all the characters.
I was, however, disappointed with the great number of grammatical and spelling errors especially in book 5. It seemed rushed, there were so many errors.
That having been said, I look forward to the next chapter. Jon Hall5

what you got to be kidding me!

I just finished the Mars Colony books 1 thru 5. I was looking forward to books 6 thru 10 or at least a couple more books. I really think you have a mean streak. This is a great story why leave it here? I’ve just downloaded another of your series Starfighter I think. I hope it has an ending and not leaving me suspended in space nearJupiter!!!!!!! Really love this series

The series started off slow. So slow that it was hard to keep reading. But I'm sure glad I did. A lot of great characters. The main character Ozzy has more lives than a cat. Lots of action though out. The ending is good but I want more. Georgia Woods103

There is a puzzle humanity must solve to save the universe...

A lone persecuted archaeologist holds the key to translation of the clues that can save Humanity, but will he solve the puzzles in time for Humanity to fulfill its original purpose and save the Universe?
Pat Rieder12

Good beginning, ending...?

The storyline is solid for the first books. As I read the last book the editing became worse and worse. It was tough to read around the many errors in the last book. It was as if no one edited the final book. Shame. Erwin J169 3

Action

Constant action, never ending, sometimes to much. Evil politicians, kind of reminds me of the current state of the country. You don't have to hunt for evil it's just a biden away. Harry McCudden111

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I think that it was a very good read, different from the usual books I read, very glad that I have. How ever you enjoy reading, this is one not to miss. Vaun Fiedler200 3

Terrific read!

Great characters: heroes and bad guys. Think of personal choice and freedom as apposed to no choice and no freedom. Conflict and drama abound. Dale48 3

I actually read just over half of the book. I won't diss it, but I quit because I found it almost unreadable. Jasvir Dhillon18
