Noon ~~ My Max Brand project continues with the first of three titles featuring Rusty Sabin. The White Indian was first published in Argosy magazine as a six part series in 1933. My edition is from 2011 and is Large Print, which was a treat, I must confess.

But the story itself was not as much of a treat. Rusty is taken captive by hostile Cheyenne when he was three years old. His mother died in the attack, which happened when his father was away from the family homestead.

After this explosive beginning, we next meet Rusty, now known as Red Hawk, when he is facing a ceremony of initiation. He knows he is white, but he says his heart is red. But even though he is aware that he should not be afraid of the ceremony, he also knows that he is very much afraid of it, and also a bit repelled by the idea of piercing his chest and then tearing the piercings out to prove he is a man. But if he does not succeed he will not be considered worthy of becoming a true warrior.

What will he do when it is his turn to enter the lodge and have the medicine men insert the loops of rawhide into his flesh? Where would he go if he cannot be a Cheyenne warrior? What strange adventures will he have, no matter which way he decides?

I did not care for the underlying thread throughout the story that repeatedly implied that white men are superior beings. There were many cringe-worthy scenes, which were the main reason I was not as thrilled with this book as I have been with other Max Brand titles.

But the parts about White Horse were pretty cool, even allowing for the typical pattern of seeing a wild horse and wanting so badly to own it that both man and horse are nearly killed in the process of the capture. I was tickled by the idea of White Horse's color pattern. Not completely white at all, he was supposed to have a black mark on his face and all four legs were black from hooves up to knees and hocks. I always had to remind myself to dip my mental picture of him in ink! lol

The story is fairly predictable without more than a couple of surprises, but I can see where it would have captured the imaginations of Argosy readers back in the day. Book two of the Rusty Sabin series was published originally in 1934, so we will see what difference a year makes with Brand and his approach to Rusty/Red Hawk.

The White Indian, first published as a six-part pulp serial in 1933, is a Western novel set mainly amongst Native Americans, and was the first in a series featuring the lead character Rusty Sabin/Red Hawk. Rusty, orphaned after a raid, is adopted by the Cheyenne and the story progresses from there. It has no connection with an earlier Max Brand title of 1926 'The White Cheyenne'. The story is written in the usual professional no-nonsense style of Brand which combines highly descriptive atmospheric passages with sudden unexpected moments of violence. Most enjoyable.1 Fredrick Danysh6,844 179

Rusty Sabin is kidnapped by the Cheyennes at the age of two. Eighteen years later re will enter the white man's world. He will chase a great white stallion, hunt the plainsman who is killing Cheyenne, and meet a girl. This is a good old style western novel.westerns Tim301 19

Gave three stars but upon further reflection, it deserves more. Besides telling a good story, there is plenty to think about in the clash of cultures and values. Mike Mackey332 5
