Another fun installment in the series. The cast was easier to keep track of, and the plot moved at a good pace. Plenty of suspects and twists. I d seeing a bit more of Chrissy's father and paternal grandmother. She's a hoot! 1 June Lynch8 Read

Another great Christmas "Who done it" by Mr. Brown

Bravo Benedict Brown! Once again he has written another tantalizing tale for the cozy mystery lover. As always it kept me guessing until the end. That is what I love about his writing. There is always enough intrigue to give your sleuthing skills a good run and then that finale twist of the dagger.
This can be read as a stand alone book, but I highly recommend reading the entire Lord Edgington series. The characters in this series are so endearing and entertaining you can't help but fall in love with them. Lord Edgington and his apprentice grandson Chrissy have the unique relationship that only come with being family. The rest of the family, staff and if course the beloved fateful dog, gives you the familiar feel of being part of this motley crew so you can't wait to see what could possibly happen in there next adventure.
I have started the new Marius Quinn series by Benedict Brown and have been captivated by the new characters, Marius and his childhood friend and ex muse Bella. This series could very well surpass his previous work as he has really grown as a mystery writer. Introducing Marius in one of the later Lord Edgington books "Killer in the wings" was brilliant.
You must give this author a spin. The great amount of time given to research and detail shows and puts him a cut above most cozy mystery writers. His excerpts in the back of the book on his research is just as entertaining and informative as the books themselves. Enjoy! Connie P.236

Who in the heck dunnit?

Chrissy is awestruck by a beautiful damsel in distress while riding the train. She had quite the sob story about how one of her relatives was trying to kill her grandfather, Lord Rivers, a vile old man who manipulates all of their lives. When she accidentally leaves her charm bracelet on the train, Chrissy tells Grandfather, Lord Edgington, the whole story and they make it their goal to find Holly, the damsel in distress, and return her bracelet. If they can also snoop out the potential killer of Holly's grandfather, so much the better. Chrissy and Lord Edgington, along with Chrissy's mother, father, grandmother, and half of Lord Edgington's household staff, are setting out to crash Lord Rivers' Christmas house party. They find so many potential suspects that it may take until the new year to nail this case. In the meantime, Chrissy and Lord Edgington are narrowing the list of suspects down with the assistance of other party goers when two of the potential murderers are themselves murdered. This series is "Lord Edgington Investigates" but without Christopher (Chrissy), it wouldn't be half the fun. I really enjoy having Chrissy narrate the investigations. He is young, funny (many times unintentionally), completely open in his thoughts, nice, and he is learning how to be a good investigator alongside his grandfather. I very much enjoyed this book. It was spending Christmas with the family, if the family members are trying to kill each other off. John Presler638 17

Christopher has a chance meeting with a girl while heading home for Christmas. Holly says that there have been some attempts on her grandfather's life. While admitting that he is not a nice person, she also fears that he will be killed by a member of the family, as they stand to benefit the most. After Chrissy relates the information to his grandfather, Lord Edgington, a plan is developed to be in attendance at the home in the hopes of preventing a potential murder.

When Lord Edgington and Chrissy arrive at their destination, they were greeted by an elderly gentleman who recognized Lord Edgington and welcomed him. The man who greeted them was Peregrine Rivers and he claimed that people were trying to kill him. Upon their arrival, Chrissy also meets Lord Rivers' nephews, Nathan and his brother, Silas. Before long, there is a murder, but it is Silas that is killed, not Lord Rivers.

Who killed SIlas? Was his death an accident or intentional? Was he the intended victim? Will there be other deaths? Can Lord Edgington and Chrissy unravel the mystery before others die?

Benedict Brown has created another great Lord Edgington mystery with great characters and plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader thoroughly engaged all the way to the end.

Wonderful Christmas mystery!

Would it even be Christmas if Lord Edgington, Chrissy, and the staff from Cranley Hall didn't find themselves travelling to a distant location to solve a murder? Not in the world of Lord Edgington Investigates.

When Chrissy meets a mysterious young woman on the train who claims her grandfather is going to be murdered, he and his grandfather (and most of the family) pack up and head out to help prevent the murder.

Benedict Brown writes the best Christmas mysteries. I love all of his books, but the wonderfully written Christmas mysteries are my favorites. Learning about British Christmas traditions and foods from this time period adds an extra layer of interest to this book.

This book has the perfect amount of humor, character manipulations, and red herrings that made it an amazing read. The characters are interesting and so well developed that I can honestly feel concern and sympathy for them.

I am looking forward to the next book, or books in the series where Chrissy and his grandfather take their mystery solving skills to different countries. Susan Barno73

Delightful read that gets right to the chase. Family rivalries as per normal or intensified by the Christmas holiday curse of spending time w/ family? There are mysterious characters; diabolical descendants, money, greed and a manipulative, lonely old man who takes pleasure, no make that GREAT pleasure in playing his relatives one off each other. I love how Lord Edgington and his grandson side-kick, sleuth-in-training, Christopher, gives nod to Sherlock Holmes methods with their banter and methodology. But it's a sleuthing family affair and mother's statement ---"...it's not your job to think that the suspects are ultimately good or bad. You have to search out the discrepancies that will tell you who they really are." ---that allows Lord Edgington and Christopher to remain focused and crack the case(s) which unfold in the Lord River household. This is a fun read all the way, over the river and thru the woods to Lord River's snowy and deadly property. John Bradford337 3

This is the first book in the series that I've read, and I did so because I enjoy reading a cozy Christmas mystery during the holiday season. I will probably read many of his other books (this one is a standalone). The protagonist, Chrissy, meets a girl on a train who tells him her grandfather will soon be murdered. This intrigues Chrissy's grandfather, Lord Edgington, who packs his grandson off to spend the holidays with the girl, Holly, and her family. Then someone unexpected is murdered, and the tale begins. The story is quirky, but I d it. Some of the quirkiness I found challenging: Chrissy's entire clan accompanies Edgington and him to Holly's estate; the family seems nonchalant about the murder and the body left in the room; the entire Edginton clan is welcomed graciously as though they were invited guests. Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and plan to read more of them. Laura464 7

The one thing I wish I could change is reading these all in order... however, when you borrow books from the library, you can't always predict what is going to come when. Unless you want to wait AGES for them to come in order, one at a time with potentially months in between. Having said that, please rest assured that you do not have to read them sequentially, but it does make more sense to follow Chrissy's growth and development as a detective.

Brown writes a very entertaining Christmas mystery with all manner of hidden literary and musical references. Quite enjoyable to be watching out for those little 'Easter Eggs' in a Christmas story. I was surprised at who the killer was - I'd suspected them early on and then dismissed it, moving on to another suspect - so was pleasantly surprised during the reveal. KathleenWH130 2

For me, his best Lord Edgington mystery to date

It has been a delight to run across the writing of Benedict Brown (in the first Lord Edgington mystery, Murder at the Spring Ball) and then to devour each volume the moment it appeared.

Brown is a master of red herrings, twisted plot threads (only confusing to the reader until explained), and, of course, the great denouement.

I have also enjoyed the development of Chrissy as a full-fledged character, turning into a thoughtful young man with a the beginnings of a fine intellect.

Brown teases at the end of this work that future mysteries may take place on a 1920s version of the grand European Tour - and I can only salivate at the mischief Lord Edgington and his grandson will get up to.

So, thank you Benedict Brown. Charlene701

A flirty chance meeting on a train platform at Christmas time, England 1947, leads to Lord Edgington and his grandson Christopher visiting a snowbound manor house to investigate multiple attempts to murder the Lord of the estate. Soon after they arrive, a different victim is killed and the reason why is suddenly not so clear. Chrissy and his grandfather, along with the whole family, including servants and pets, are housebound with the far-flung relatives of the Lord who has been cruelly stringing them all along for his own amusement. This is a light-hearted romp of a Christmas mystery, similar to a closed-room situation, and I enjoyed every campy minute. Nice and light, in spite of the killing and conniving, just what I was in the mood for. series Carol54 1 follower

A Perfectly Festive 1920's Whodunit!
The Christmas bell

A perfectly festive 1920's whodunit

When Christopher and his grandfather head off on a search, it's not long before the whole clan and accompanying staff trail after them. The family dynamics of Christopher's family and those of a young lady soon intertwine and though there's the expected murder this mystery shines with humour as well as intrigue. I absolutely loved the inclusion and development of Granny and Todd ~exceptional characters. It's nice to see Christopher coming into his own under his grandfathers tutelage. Highly recommend The Christmas Bell for your holiday reading! Looking forward to seeing what's next! Anne Kavcic334 4

Some of my favorite characters are back for a Christmas story! Christopher falls for a lady in distress in the train - but she leaves quickly at their common destination, leaving a bracelet behind, which has a bell with holly on the charm. He inveigles his grandfather to seek her out, based on a few clues, to prevent what could be a murder - and they find a house full of suspicious family members - and the lord is convinced he will be murdered! Twists and turns will keep you turning the pages and having a good time trying to solve this one! I received a review copy and freely leave this honest review. Ann Gillaspie140 1 follower

Merry Murderous Christmas!

Christopher and Lord Edgington are at their best when solving murders, especially at Christmas. In this case, a seemingly damsel in distress cues Christopher’s curiosity. When she disappears, he has to find her to prevent a murder. He and his family end up spending the Christmas holiday in a mansion full of suspects including the mysteriously beautiful damsel. What Chrissy discovers is that people may not always seem to be what they truly are. Will he lose his hope in humanity or will he gain some new insight as he and his grandfather rush to solve the case before anyone else is murdered?

The Christmas Bell Mystery

This is the latest in Benedict Brown’s Lord Edgington series and his latest stand alone Christmas mystery.
Christopher Prentiss meets a beautiful young woman on the train home for Christmas and this leads to another intriguing mystery. Who is trying to kill Peregrine Rivers, is it just a case of an apparently convoluted inheritance or something much darker?
Red herrings aplenty abound, manipulations and machinations, lies and confusions all take place in this gripping novel. Brenda3,058 37

Good Mystery
A chance meeting on a snowy platform, an old miser with a fortune worth killing for, and the wrong man found dead beside the fireplace.England, 1927. When Lord Edgington hears of a failed attack on an eccentric viscount, it’s the perfect excuse to get out of seeing horrible relatives over Christmas. With his loyal grandson and their golden retriever along for the ride.
Whodunit! Someone has murdered two Christmas guest. Who would want these particular people dead?
I borrowed this book from KindleUnlimted. This in no way affects my opinion of this book. Tara D.6

It Just Wouldn’t Be Christmas Without A Great Lord Edgington Mystery!

It also wouldn’t be Christmas in a1920’s English manor home without one or two murders. I truly enjoyed this next entry into the Lord Edgington mystery collection. Whenever an inheritance is involved there will always be squabbling potential heirs. Especially when the one leaving the inheritance is a cantankerous, manipulative old codger. Fortunately Chrissy, Lord Edgington and almost the whole family is there to solve the mystery. Grab a hot toddy by a warm fire and enjoy. Patty Guerard114 3

Another excellent mystery with Lord Edgington and his grandson, Christopher. Benedict Brown brings us to a chance meeting on a train between a young woman and Christopher to his and Lord Edgington’s next case, at Christmas no less. As the story unfolds, we spend time with Christopher’s family at the manor house of Lord Rivers and his dysfunctional family. Traversing all the twists and turns of the mystery, we are kept on the edge of our seats until the very end, wondering - who is the real killer? Great read for the holidays or any snowy weekend. I adore Benedict Brown's writing style and characters in this series.
There is something about the self deprecating and humble Chrissy that is charm itself. The confident, loving, and compassionate (not mention brilliant) Lord Edginton is quite able.
The locations of the stories and attention to historical details put me right in the space.
I have been enlightened many times by the use of words not usually found in late 20th or 21st century vocabulary. I am most grateful for the Kindle definition feature.
I look forward to reading everything by this author. Happily, I still have several more in the 3 series he writes. Terri199 2

Lord Edgington and Christopher do it again

It's not a spoiler to say they've solved another! This one was a fun trip through British Christmas traditions, inheritance issues, and a progenitor who loves to manipulate everyone around him. Are bad guys always bad? Are good ones always good? Who's lying? Loved the final chapter with Christopher and Lord E also and how their relationship continues to develop! Mrs Karen Henderson23

Lots of Red Herrings!

Lord Edgington and grandson Chrissi are investigating again in this book by Benedict Brown.
Poor Chrissi is confused again by the number of suspects in this murder mystery. After meeting a beautiful woman on a train he and his family invite themselves to stay at the home of a frail lord, whose life is in danger.
I don’t think I could have been celebrating Christmas with dead bodies in the house but this was an intriguing story. Kathy3,609 257

This latest book from Benedict Brown is another enjoyable family adventure that starts with a meeting on a train. It is another opportunity for Lord Edgington and his grandson to test their investigative skills. It does seem rather outlandish for a car full of Edgingtons to arrive uninvited at a large country house in a snowstorm as guests of strangers. It is another good hearted adventure from this author, a successful addition to the series.

1927 Candy cane twists & that yuletide tingle of the season's reading!!!! Lord Edgington at Chrissy's instigation is "over the hills & far away..." to solve a yuletide conundrum. Complete with his household entourage & family including faithful Delilah, Chrissy & his grandfather unravel the secrets of enchanting Holly Bridport, her grandfather Lord Peregrine Rivers & their family. I will be reading this one again & again - highly recommend! Charlotte Liest-Williams49 1 follower

A very satisfying Christmas read!

The mystery with multiple suspects and multiple twists kept my interest throughout. I especially d the tone of the dialogues which are delightful to read, and are highly instrumental in creating the feel of the 1920s, almost as much as the richly described appearances of the rooms and their occupants. Looking forward to starting the series in the new year. Helen246 18

This is the 12th book in the “Lord Edgington investigates” series by Benedict Brown but the first one of his stories that I have read. I saw adverts for it on Kindle unlimited and decided to give this one a try as it looked a nice festive read. This one works as a standalone so it doesn’t matter if you’re not familiar with the stories, but I think I’d probably have warmed to the characters more if I’d read some of the other books. There were a few bits that seemed a bit far-fetched, just casually leaving the corpse in the house for a few days as if that’s completely normal behaviour, and I didn’t really get attached to any of the characters. I also discovered that there were also several typos in the Kindle edition, which is why I only gave it three stars. Overall, the story itself was enjoyable and I loved the fact it setting - St Audries Court - is local to me so I knew a lot of the locations described including the church they visit on Christmas Day. I’m not sure if I will read more of these yet, but it was a quick quirky read and reminded me of Edward Marston’s books who is an author I do quite enjoy reading so perhaps I will indulge in the rest of the series at some point. This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.Show full review Susan A.112 1 follower

Another great Lord Edgington holiday mystery

I really enjoyed this holiday mystery. Christopher’s seemingly chance meeting with a young woman on the train home after festivities with his school friends lays the groundwork for this mystery. Chrissy’s concern for the fears this young woman expresses leads him, his grandfather, and most of his family into a Christmas visit to help her out. When murder ensues as it usually does, Lord Edgington and Chrissy are on the case. Cattie Whaley249 2

Another Christmas Caper

Lord Edgington and Chrissy are at it again. They are off on an adventure to try to stop a murder from happening at Christmas. Will they ever have a quiet Christmas at home?! What a tangled web they find themselves in when they arrive at Lord River's estate. Lots of action and twists and turns with our favorite characters in this book. I honestly didn't see the final twist coming. Well written and a great storyline. Highly recommend! Lisa T. Ungerer211

Misdirection at Christmas

A beautiful girl in distress appeals to Chrissy. His chivalrous nature engaged, Chrissy ropes grandfather in to help, and they (and we) are off to an isolated, snow bound manor house for Christmas. A whole lot of red herrings are dragged across the path before the truth comes out at last. A classic style mystery, well done. Highly recommended. Barbara18 1 follower

Your best Lord Edmonton mystery yet!

Thank you for such a wonderful holiday story and distraction from all the shopping and festive eating. I simply loved taking a break and sitting down to an escape from all the preparation for the holiday. Please keep them coming. I have loved all of them! Debra Tucker172 1 follower

I was completely enthralled in this mystery.

I have always enjoyed this type of mystery. I was not a bit disappointed by this one. It captured my attention and kept me trying to uncover the true culprit. It is definitely a very good book and well worth reading. Recommend highly. Teddi1,071
