It's always a pleasure to read Anne Perry's annual Victorian Christmas novella, although I have to say there's nothing particularly 'Christmasy' about this year's mystery except that it is set in the days leading up to Christmas.

Dr Crowe and his assistant Scuff run a medical clinic for London's poor. One day he is called to the scene of a carriage accident where he finds a young woman pinned with a severe injury to her leg. After treating the wound, he has her brought back to his clinic where she must stay for several days while she recovers. Crowe becomes enamored but unfortunately for him, she is Ellie Hollister, the only child of a wealthy businessman, and far above him in class. But Crowe can dream and tries to find as many opportunities as possible to stroll past her home hoping to catch a glimpse of her.

On one such outing, Crowe sees her having words with a young man and when the argument turns violent, he steps in. He is shocked to learn the man is her fiancee. He cannot fathom why Ellie would consent to such a match. Is she being coerced by her father? Crowe decides to investigate and leaves his young apprentice in charge of the clinic.

The story is a quick, heart-warming read with a touch of danger and much evil-doing leading to a very exciting ending. I enjoyed the historical setting and the interactions between these characters. Lovely cover art too!

This is a wonderful mystery book with a Vintage Christmas vibe.
An old-time doctor, along with his apprentice that was an orphan he took in off of the streets and taught him everything he knows, have a free clinic set up on the Banks of the Thames.
He is a no-nonsense doctor but kindly accepting fish wrapped in newspaper, whatever fruit is in season or odd jobs done for him. He knows not to make the poor feel unworthy or they won't come to his clinic until it's too late.
There is the sweetest little street urchin in the story, just five years old and she brings a kitten barely weaned as payment for taking care of her cut. She shows such bravery and even helps out the old doctor handing him towels and doing other small chores and in return gets delicious and nutritious meals.
There is just enough of a mystery to keep the reader reading and intrigued.
The setting feels as though you are watching a feel-good old-time movie.
The author has many books out, but I've only read two of them, both Christmas mysteries.
I really do need to read more of her books, they are so well written.

The holiday novellas of gifted mystery writer, Anne Perry, are treasures to which this reader looks forward each year. This twentieth offering of her Yuletide mysteries is certainly another fine piece. There's mystery, superlative mise en scène with its spot-on historic detail as well as a strong Dickensian feel.

True to form, Ms. Perry has drawn on a secondary character of her William and Hester Monk mystery series, to act as the protagonist within her holiday story. The story opens with Dr. Crowe attending the wounds of a young street orphan, Mattie. He treats her with tenderness, respect and concern. Crowe operates a clinic which mostly attends to the poor in its vicinity. Most people pay for their services with food and the occasional donation helps to procure the medicines and bandages necessary to treat the clientele. On occasion, a well to do client is attended to at the clinic as urgency requires. Such was the case 8 months prior when Crowe attended to Ellie, a victim of a nearby road accident. Thoughts of her continue to tease his mind. He had cared for her through her convalescence. She, however, was the daughter of a wealthy man and Crowe, with his meager means, stood no chance of courting her. He finds himself strolling near Ellie's home on his way back to the clinic after procuring supplies. He observes a man treating Ellie rather harshly. The man is Paul, Ellie's supposed fiancé and son of a notorious, wealthy and dangerous man. Crowe intercedes and has immediately made an enemy. As Crowe wanders back to the clinic, he wonders how Ellie's father could permit Ellie's engagement to such a brute and decides he's going to get to the bottom of things and try and save Ellie from her unfortunate fate. Thus begins this holiday mystery.

The writing of fulfilling short stories is never an easy task. Yet, Ms. Perry is a master of her craft and has again, delivered an atmospheric and compelling mystery within a modest number of pages. Her scene descriptions are rich and her characters, amazingly well developed. The humanity of the characters is palpable and the reader is afforded an escape from the current world into another of a distant time. As the protagonist goes about his sleuthing, the tension gradually builds and ultimately, to a fevered pitch. As the tension relaxes, the story is drawn to a satisfying conclusion. Although set in the days leading up to Christmas, the references to the holiday are few, yet tasteful.

I am grateful to Ms. Perry and her publisher, Ballantine Books, for having provided a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Their generosity, however, has not influenced this review - the words of which are mine alone.

Christmas on the riverÂ’s edges!

At last a story about our favourite medico in the poor areas around the docks—Dr. Crowe, and how he gains a family in spite of the dangers he finds himself in. After all family comes in all shapes and sizes and maybe a chosen one has other special qualities.
Will Monk (known as Scuff), Hesta and William Monk’s son, is studying medicine and being mentored by Crowe. He realizes that he now thinks of Crowe’s practice as his home. We meet a small girl with no name, a survivor on the streets who pays Crowe with a kitten. Oh, and helps him eat some soup! This was all so loveable, sweet and tragic at the same time. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. A young woman, Ellie Hollister, whose life Crowe saved a year ago comes back into his life, and now it looks Crowe’s trying to save her again. This time from a fiancé she doesn’t want. A Christmas story that gives new hope as Crowe finds a family forming around him, despite the unsavoury conditions and challenges of the area he’s chosen to reside in. There’s also kindness and information for the Doc who saved so many. The inhabitants of those riverfront slum areas don’t forget!

Victorian London during the Christmas season conjures up warm, nostalgic feelings of glowing lights, greenery and berries, holiday parties, roasted chestnutsÂ… but Anne PerryÂ’s latest takes the reader to the bleak streets and back alleys, a clinic for the poor, and a rush to get answers to a mystery that might save a sweet young woman from a cruel fate for Christmas.

In this nineteenth Christmas stories release, A Christmas Deliverance returns us to the world of William Monk mysteries and focuses on engaging side characters, Crowe and Scuff. Readers donÂ’t have to have read the William Monk series to enjoy the story, but long-time fans of the series will be well-rewarded to see what has come along since the events of the last book for the man practicing medicine without his degree in the meaner parts of London and the one-time mudlark orphan taken in by William and Hester Monk who wishes to follow his adopted mother into medicine.

Crowe finds himself in what he believes is a one-sided unrequited love for a sweet daughter of a wealthy London businessman who owns warehouses and a wharf along the Thames. He knows sheÂ’s out of his class and he tries to be content with thinking of her fondly. But then her father plans to marry her to the cruel, abusive son of his business partner. Crowe knows the only way to save her might not save her at all- but he has to try. He has to return to the mysterious events of the fire that consumed one of her fatherÂ’s warehouses and his business partnerÂ’s goods, the death of the night watchman, and the subsequent insurance payout that increased their wealth. Scuff backs him completely even though they both face danger from someone who doesnÂ’t want the incident brought back to light again since Monk and his River Police didnÂ’t find evidence at the time of foul play.

I love how the author blends sweet elements the little street girl and her kitty, the homey feeling at the clinic that Crowe and Scuff run together and then the harder biting mystery they must solve out on LondonÂ’s streets and along the Thames set against the holidays. It was all so marvelously done and I was reluctant to let the book go when the last page was reached.

Victorian Era. London, England. Poor Section Near Docks. Anne Perry’s 20th Christmas story truly touched me. Even at a very young age, I had an extreme sense of fairness. As I grew up , I learned that ‘life is not fair’. This is something with which I still have great difficulty. It is a pleasure to read a story that ends fairly especially at Christmastime. A doctor and his apprentice operate a health clinic for the poor of Victorian England which include street children who have no parent for all kinds of reasons. There are also certain people who control others through blackmail, ‘gang’ superiority, fraud, and just for power. This story has one person trying to help another out of a bad situation because it is the right thing to do and also because the person cares. I wish more people would care for the right reasons.holiday mystery own7 s Bonnie DeMoss894 150

Scuff, the adopted son of Thames River Police Inspector Monk, is studying to be a doctor and apprenticing with Dr. Crowe, helping to treat London's poor. When Dr. Crowe begins investigating suspicious circumstances surrounding a young woman, Ellie, who he had treated, Scuff finds himself in charge of the clinic a few weeks before Christmas. He also has to field questions from shady policemen who want to know what Dr. Crowe is up to.

This is a compelling mystery, which brings Christmas to us in a different way. I am still transported to the Christmas season in London, but to a community that is poor and to whom a bed and a warm meal would be a welcome gift. The addition of the character Mattie brings home the true spirit of Christmas, and it's more real than any temporary celebration. There is a wonderful romance, and we see the stark class differences that exist between the rich and the poor in Victorian London.

The most heartbreaking aspect of this novella is the many homeless children who seem to be basically ignored by those of means.

This is a holiday novella that, in addition providing to a great mystery and romance, reminds us to reach out to others in need.

I'm not entirely sure what I thought the book would be when I started reading. So many holiday titles are focused more on romance, so having one that was a mystery was a change I looked forward to experiencing.

The overall plot line was fine, but I sometimes felt Dr. Crowe spent way more time bouncing around with introspection on things than was truly needed. His hemming and hawing the same few concerns soon became tedious for me to read. That made the scenes where the story was written from Scuff's point of view a welcome breath of fresh air.

Somehow I managed to finish the book, but ended up feeling I'd just spent 2 hours on the phone with my sister who does to hammer the same few points to death in a conversation.5 s Christine1,536 33

I always love getting to know some of the side characters from Perry's full-length novels a little better when they get the spotlight in these novellas. I love that William Monk, who isn't the main character, still makes an important contribution to a sweet, cozy ending. His adopted son Will Monk, known as Scuff, is one of the two main characters and the parts of the story told from his point of view are my favorites. I the character of Dr. Crowe, but unfortunately his chapters moved very slowly for me. I was also disappointed that a book called A Christmas Deliverance didnÂ’t really have a lot about Christmas about it. As a fan of the William Monk series, I enjoyed the story, but it wasn't my favorite of Perry's Christmas novellas.

I haven't read Anne Perry's Monk series, but I enjoyed this Christmas offering nevertheless. It features secondary characters with intricate backstories, but I never felt lost. The author did a great job of weaving pertinent bits into the story without bogging it down. This book has definitely piqued my interest in the series, though, so I'll be checking it out in the New Year.3 s Kathy3,610 257

Part of the Monk series - a sweet Christmas story
Doctoring the poor is the mission of one certain doctor featured in this book, but he comes across one young woman who seems to need his protection as well as his doctoring. One of Monk's reformed boys from the streets is learning the art of being a doctor, serving a kind and generous man. It is a tale meant to pull at the heartstrings and does so successfully. Good vs Evil and the spirit of Christmas. It can be read and enjoyed even if you have no knowledge of Perry's Monk series.

IÂ’m a huge fan of PerryÂ’s Monk series, and since another one of those doesnÂ’t seem to be forthcoming, I jumped at the chance to read about their grown up adopted mudlark Scuff.

This was more CroweÂ’s story, and I found his investigation a little slow to get going. I the doctor as a side character in the Monk mysteries, but he never captured me here. ScuffÂ’s storyline showed us his thoughts on his past and on Monk and Hester, and that was rewarding for me. I missed seeing an interaction between them, though.

This has all the observations on peoplesÂ’ hopes and frailties youÂ’d expect from a Perry novel, and we even got to hear a few words from Monk. A lot of the story was CroweÂ’s internal thoughts rather than plot or dialogue, but the ending was satisfying.

Anne Perry's latest Christmas novella finds Dr. Crowe and his apprentice, Scuff, running their free clinic in London's poorest neighborhood. When a young patient appears with no way to pay but her precious kitten, of course both child and cat are taken in ... even though Crowe is unsure how they'll feed two extra mouths.

In the meanwhile, Crowe is thinking often of a former patient: a beautiful society girl, Ellie, whom he treated when she was injured in a carriage accident near the clinic and couldn't be moved. When he goes to check on her, he finds she's engaged to marry a man whom it is clear is cruel to her -- and whom she does not love. And herein comes the mystery, as Crowe discovers that Ellie's father is involved in an apparent insurance scam. Soon, Crowe and Scuff are up to their eyeballs in an investigation.

Another warm hearted, altruistic, and never maudlin Christmas novel from Anne Perry.
She creates a depth of goodness in her characters that is so embraceable--and often lacking in our current, self enamored world. Old school values triumph over evil in this story. Refreshing.
I rarely write a synopsis of the book. It seems redundant when you can read one from the cover. I did choose the audio. The reader is ok, but her intonations are minor chord and could be more upbeat..This book ends on a high note, though. A nice, cozy read for any season.

Anne Perry's annual Christmas books fill the same spot for me as Hallmark or Netflix Christmas movies--they are usually not her best work, but nevertheless are a must read rite-of-passage signaling that the Christmas season is upon us. (Although I have to say that Christmas feels a bit shoehorned in to most of Perry's seasonal novellas and this one is no exception--there are brief mentions of Christmas pudding and the gifting of a doll but it is really not what you'd call "Christmassy.") This time the series regular who makes a peripheral appearance is River Police Inspector William Monk, whose adopted son Will (known as Scuff) is apprenticing with Dr. Crowe at his free medical clinic near the Thames. When Crowe finds out that Ellie, a former patient who he is romantically attracted to, is set to marry a violent business associate of her father just after Christmas and apparently against her will, he embarks on an investigation into her father's business affairs, uncovering arson and murder and putting himself, Scuff and their clinic in danger. The period setting is dark and atmospheric and there's a charming subplot involving an orphaned girl, but the mystery itself is pretty thin--which probably won't bother regular Christmas readers one bit.

Thanks to NetGalley and to Ballantine Books for providing an ARC of this title in return for my honest review.2 s Helen Geng734 6

Enjoyable stand-alone novella about some of the secondary characters in Anne PerryÂ’s William Monk series.

I agree that more editing could have tightened & improved the plot—for example, when Dr. Crowe goes sleuthing, it’s mostly telling & not doing.

And whatÂ’s with the subplot with Mattie, the orphan girl, & her kitty, Rosie? It seemed shoehorned in.
They seemed to be foisted onto Dr. Crowe; we are not shown him warming up to the little girl.

Maybe Anne Perry is gearing up to start a new series with Dr. Crowe?
The ending seemed a little rushed.

I read Anne Perry to get an authentic historical view of the Victorians, not really to pick up our contemporary modern attitudes.
I detected anti-fur & anti-meat attitudes in this novella.
I know that only the very progressive Victorians held such views.

As a book reviewer I have been making one consistent statement now for the past twenty years. This would be the fact that I cannot imagine my Christmas Holiday not involving the reading of the annual Christmas Holiday Mystery novel from the legendary Anne Perry.

This yearÂ’s novel is titled A CHRISTMAS DELIVERANCE and, in the same fashion of all the prior Christmas mysteries, the story involves either one of her regular characters from her recurring series or some peripheral character from those stories who are now involved in some sort of mystery or moral quandary on or about Christmas Day. This novel brings us a pair of terrific protagonists who just demand to be cheered for. The first is Dr. Crowe, who runs a free clinic near the banks of the River Thames in London. The second is his apprentice, the young man better known to Anne Perry readers as Scuff, or the adopted son of William and Hester Monk. William is also the head of the Thames River Police.

At the start of the novel we find Dr. Crowe, who has never charged anyone for his medical services, stitching up the finger of a young orphan girl named Mattie. With Scuff being an orphan himself, he takes an instant liking to Mattie and lets her stay at the clinic. Plus, thereÂ’s a new kitten there who needs taking care of and Mattie is more than willing to take on that responsibility. Dr. Crowe soon finds himself in a bit of a dilemma as the young lady he has grown quite fond of, Ellie Hollister, is engaged to the son of one of her fatherÂ’s business partners. Ellie does not wish to marry Paul Dolan and the fact that he is the son of the highly nefarious Silas Dolan, a wealthy villain who may have something he is holding over the head of EllieÂ’s father Albert Hollister makes things extra touchy.

When Crowe learns of a violent warehouse fire that took the life of an innocent night watchman he becomes concerned. Extra concerned because the warehouse belonged to Albert Hollister and the word Crowe is hearing on the street is that it was a case of arson and insurance fraud which Hollister and the DolanÂ’s cashed in on in a large way. Crowe immediately makes it his business to look further into this not only to get justice but to hopefully find a way to free Ellie from her marital obligation to Paul Dolan so that they can finally be together.

The problem with this is that Crowe is no detective nor can he safely protect himself from the villainous sorts behind this alleged arson/insurance fraud scheme and he instantly puts himself in harmÂ’s way. It is no surprise that it will take the cunning and street smarts of his young colleague Scuff to bail him out of some jams. What this also does is force Scuff to involve his adopted father, William Monk, in the case. The situation is not one that is foreign to Monk, he simply cannot do anything about it because there was no clear evidence of the arson or fraud scheme. However, this being an Anne Perry novel should provide indication that our protagonists will do whatever they can to see that the moral compass is pointed in the right direction and that all might be safely and soundly wrapped up by Christmas Day.

A CHRISTMAS DELIVERANCE gives readers all they could want from an Anne Perry Christmas mystery --- great characters, scenes of old London during this classic time of the year, and a heart-warming ending that completely satisfies and reminds us what the Christmas season is really all about!

This book was suggested by a friend as a good historical Christmas novel and it was that, though simple and uncomplicated. It was an easy read, but didn't inspire me to read more by the same author. The story is a typical one: poor, scrappy person rising to the top, a mystery to be solved and good-hearted people to warm the heart. I believe there is a whole series of these books, but this will probably be the only one I read. Maybe reading it for Valentines (when it came from the library) wasn't helpful!

Anne Perry's newest Christmas novella returns to the Victorian England of William Monk. It's been a few years since she wrote a mystery with Monk in the lead, and he only plays a bit part in this book. The focus is on Crowe, a bit player in the Monk series, and Monk's adoptive son, Scuff, who is now a young adult studying to become a doctor.

Perry's Christmas books are not as dark as her full-length mysteries, and because they are short, they do not have time to dig very deep beneath the surface. The mystery in this book is fairly simple: Crowe intervenes in an altercation involving a young woman, Ellie, who is engaged to a nefarious man she doesn't love. While Crowe is busy sleuthing and trying to rescue Ellie, Scuff is left alone to manage the clinic. Having once been a child of the streets, he takes in a young ward.

I've been reading Anne Perry for years, and it's always nice to have a reunion with her Monk series characters, who have been sidelined for her new series starring Elena Standish. Hopefully we'll get to visit some of the characters of the Thomas Pitt series next.1 ElissaAuthor 36 books105

If Anne Perry wrote it, I want to read it, because I know I will have a wonderful time revisiting old characters I've met in other books and meeting new ones. This is a Christmas tale, but there is a great deal of drama and action in this wonderful and satisfying story, which ( all her books) is minutely researched for period detail.
