This gets five stars primarily because of Sunny's books which put me in tears. Ann M. Martin wrote that one and it's the best one in the series. The way her mother's dying and death is handled is perfect. It's spot on. It was too close to home, actually. It might be the best depiction of a parent dying that I've read in a long long time, 'cause Sunny watches her mom die.
Dawn's diary it should be noted was incomplete in this edition. I'm not sure what happened there, but at least half the book was missing.
Amalia deals with racism in a very raw way, and it not only affects her but everyone around her. I felt this book was well done because it was a traumatic event for Amalia and I think it makes it easy for white readers to understand why people have ptsd and trauma because of racism.
Ducky - my fave - his last book was disappointing. Maybe because this one wasn't written by Lerangis, who wrote the first two Ducky diaries. I think if this had been written now, Ducky would be out, and maybe that makes this diary a little dated. But I also appreciated his constant confusion over why he loves but isn't IN love with these girls he hangs out with so much. I just wish it had been written a little better.
