Astor has a very hard life as a young bisexual teens who must avoid the meaner machinations of her more close-minded classmates, and field the drunken verbal and physical aggressions from her bitter mother. She can't expect any support from her avoidant father or perfect sister, so she retreats into the solidity of her friendships. When the boy she s takes her out, Astor thinks it will be a dream, but it's not. It's a nightmare. And soon, it becomes a public one, in which Astor's voice no longer matters.

I love this story for all the usual reasons. The plot is strong and believable, I invested in the characters, and the town felt familiar to me. What makes this work feel so important to me is the representation. Astor is a bisexual teen, written in a realistic way, by which I mean she is shown attracted to more than one gender at the same time. She's also a young person wrestling with her mental health, in this case, because of repeated trauma. Astor portrays PTSD in a young person in a realistic way. I think this is so important in fiction!

I'm so impressed with this debut novel. Stylistically and narratively, it has so much to offer. I can't wait for the next offering from Amy Jane Lehan!
