This is a world where the remnants of humanity cling to existence on scattered islands in a sea-swallowed landscape where the bonded riders of genetically created predatory horse creatures are akin to celebrities. This adult romance novel blends elements of dystopia, fantasy, romance, and sci-fi to create a unique and intriguing story.

Brigid's sister has disappeared without a trace. Desperate for answers, she seeks employment at the enigmatic world of Meridian Station, a place known for its exhibitions of genetically modified horses called Druadan. And the last place her sister was seen. As she delves deeper into the secrets of the station, she forms connections - to varying degrees - with the three intriguing riders. Brigid navigates the complexities of her relationships with the three men and uncovers the mysteries surrounding her sister's disappearance. The dynamics between the characters are richly developed, and the chemistry sizzles on the page, adding depth and tension to the story. I did have to laugh a few times as Brigid tells herself not to get involved with the riders and then immediately can't help herself when she does just that. I think there is a reason, but it has not been said explicitly yet.

While the characters may initially seem familiar romance archetypes, Cole imbues them with depth and complexity. I really the slowburn of this because I think it's unique in the why-choose subgenre and we also learn enough about the characters' backstory to really get attached. The plot is filled with twists and turns that are unexpected.

One of the book's strengths lies in its world-building, with Cole painting a vivid and immersive picture of a world transformed by environmental catastrophe and populated by genetically engineered creatures. It's just so expansive and interesting; I found myself enraptured and excited to continue. The bond between Brigid and the Druadan horses adds an extra layer of intrigue. I adore the horses and I really cannot wait to find out more about them. Especially with that ending.

Overall, "Shadowbound" is a unique and immersive read that will appeal to numerous fans of romance, dystopia, and scifi a. With its unique premise, compelling characters, and gripping storyline, it's a must-read for anyone looking for a fresh and exciting take on the genre.

Why choose romances are my guilty pleasure! If you can even call it that since I’m pretty open about how much I love them
