The fifth Mae Martin Psychic Mystery

A visit to the Mescalero Apache reservation turns from vacation to turmoil for Mae Martin.

Reno Geronimo has more money than a starving artist should. He's avoiding his fiancée and his family. His former mentor, nearing the end of her life, refuses to speak to him and no one knows what caused the rift. Distressed and frustrated, Reno's fiancée asks Mae to use her psychic gift to find out what he's hiding. Love and friendship are rocked by conflict as she gets closer and closer to the truth.

The Mae Martin Series

No murder, just mystery. Every life hides a secret, and love is the deepest mystery of all.

‘Truth doesn’t want you to stop it. It wants you to stir it up.”

Mae Martin is still trying to settle in with her lover Jamie as her friends are dealing with the upcoming demise of one of the known painters in the area. Florencia’s work is well known and her eccentricities are even better known. Helping Niall begin to pack up Flo’s life, she is struck by how she has banished her family from her life, adamantly forbidding them near her or anything else of hers.

Meanwhile, Mae begins a convoluted psychic whodunnit that could set Jamie’s friends against both him and her. The bits and pieces make no sense to her and she needs to keep herself present to put all the pieces together. All this while she tries to keep herself from “fixing” Jamie and her, and understanding why she reacts as she does at times with and without him.

Told in masterful Foxx style, this fifth book in the series gives us peeks into the backstory of both Jamie and Mae, given them both places to decompress and teachers to learn more about their gifts. Question is, can they get out of their own way to learn it. Highly recommended 5/5 RichardAuthor 30 books49

A few chapters into the book while reading I had to pause one day and note: "Another visit with Mae Martin sure is comfy... Smooth and flowing... Just bubbles along... Reading Ms Foxx's prose is settling down on silk cushions with a big glass of milk and a batch of fresh, mild ginger cookies right out of the oven. Sigh..."

That about sums it up. Aside from the characters and setting, there are two other things I love about Amber Foxx's work. (1) I never have to re-format the books before reading, and (2) I never feel the urge to pull out a red pen and re-write one of her sentences. Both the editing and formatting are always good.

This mystery series is becoming one of my all-time favorites. The stories are kind of low-key and cozy in general. We get to know the characters pretty well. The books are probably what you'd call "slice of life" stories. They never involve grisly scenes or murders, but they do involve mysteries that keep me reading. The main question I kept asking in this one was "What the heck is Reno hiding?" And I also wanted to know why Zak is such a creep. And who really stole the parrots. In this one I also felt less anxious about Jamie, who seems to be pulling himself together. In the past (I'm so awful!) I've sometimes thought poor Mae should just jettison him, because she's got enough going on without having to take care of him, too.

Normally I'm not a fan of mysteries unless there are dead bodies dropping all over the place but the spiritual adventures of Mae (and Jamie) keep me enthralled in this series. And it gets better and better with each book. All of these characters, even the minor ones, are so well fleshed out that they're real people to me. And the descriptions of scenery make me feel I'm there. Without giving any of the story away in this book we get to learn a little more about Jamie through his friends and see Mae battle with her own personal demons regarding when it's okay to use her gift and when it's not. This is far and away my favourite book in the series so far! Cyril Patrick Feerick88 9
