Beautifully written historical fiction.1 Catherine Henderson1 review

This is a fascinating account of the life of Angus MacDonald and his Nez Perce wife Catherine, in the 1800s.Angus was working for the Hudson Bay Company ,trading with Native tribes, guns for beaver pelts with Native tribes. The author has lyrical descriptions of the Northwest landscapes, and shows how they crossed their cultural differences in their long marriage. We learn how the Native tribes were so impacted by European settlers moving west and taking their land, through the eyes of Catherine and her relatives, and the difficult position Angus was in.Their son Duncan , as a mixed race man, had challenges to integrate into the European culture, and was an intelligent and successful person.A great read for anyone curious about early American history, and in the current interest in indigenous ways collaborating with European culture. Angus McDonald had to escape from Scotland or risk arrest. In 1838, he contracted with the Hudson Bay Company to trade in the Pacific Northwest. There he discovers majestic mountains, raging rivers, and buffalo. He meets and marries Catherine, who is related to Nez Perce royalty, and together they face competing claims of British fur traders and gold seekers, settlers and Native Americans who’ve lives for thousands of years in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. The Shining Mountains is a brilliant, fictional exploration of a family’s clash between colonial expansion and native culture, based on the author’s blended Scottish and Nez Pierce ancestors.

This is a beautiful novel and I loved being immersed in Christie's poetic descriptions of the land and the people. I was honored to interview her for a new books podcast: https://newbooksnetwork.com/the-shini...1 Alison Ehara-Brown1 review5

This is one of the best books I have read in years. The process of incredible research and investigation that Alix Christie did into her ancestors as well as the deeply collaborative process of consultation that she did with the Pacific northwest tribes elders councils and individuals have creates an incredible novel that you will have trouble putting down once you start reading it. This book will teach you so much about the history of the West Coast and this country. I highly recommend this book to everybody. It should be required reading for everyone who lives on these lands we call the United States of America. Susan Smith135

A well-written, well researched tale based on a family of the Hudson Fur trade days in the Great Northwest. Written with compassion for the original inhabitants, it is a tale of the land as much as the people that live there. I d how deeply the women were examined and the observations made about many of the historical events that transpire during the four generations of the book. Would love to see a prequel or a sequel- a movie even! Elizabeth BellAuthor 4 books89

Not enough is written about métis families. I enjoyed following this one, although I found myself longing for an Author's Note to parse what is known and what was invented. Perhaps the print version has one? (I listened to the audio and was happy to find it.) Heartbreaking history, well told. Ron Frampton623 20
